INNOVATE® Maryland

Maryland remains steadfast in its mission to lead, inspire, and transform

Maryland has long stood as a beacon of innovation, where history and progress intersect to create one of the most dynamic ecosystems in the United States (U.S.). With a legacy of pioneering technological breakthroughs, healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship, the state has solidified its role as a leader in national and global advancements. Nestled between Washington, D.C., and the Atlantic Ocean, the state is a strategic epicenter for research, development, and cutting-edge industries, making it an ideal launchpad for forward-thinking ventures.

Maryland has earned the nickname “America in Miniature” due to the remarkable diversity packed into its 12,406 square miles of land and water. Nearly every natural feature is found here, with the exception of a desert, as water is an integral part of the state’s landscape . This moniker also reflects its historical significance, having played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s founding and the impact it has today. Much like the U.S., Maryland is home to a diverse population representing ethnicities and cultures from all around the globe. The state has produced influential figures across various fields, including politics, law, the arts, healthcare, sports, and religious leadership.

The state also boasts a legacy of firsts—the birthplace of the first railroad, dental school, and umbrella factory – as well as an inventive spirit that has led to the creation of groundbreaking technologies such as the gas light, the linotype machine, and the refrigerator. From the laboratories of world-renowned institutions to the boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies, Maryland fosters a culture of ingenuity and ambition. Since 2015, Maryland has had the highest median household income of any state, primarily due to its proximity to Washington, D.C., and its diversified economy.

Home to a highly educated workforce, top-tier research universities, and a robust startup ecosystem, the state is shaping the future through groundbreaking discoveries and transformative solutions. The state’s commitment to progress is unwavering, and its impact is felt far beyond its borders. The state is actively positioning itself as a leader in technology and data innovation. In 2025, the Moore Administration launched the $1 billion “Capital of Quantum” initiative, a public-private partnership aimed at establishing Maryland as a global hub for quantum information science and technology. Additionally, the state government has started modernizing, including the formation of the Digital Infrastructure Group to advance statewide broadband expansion and the establishment of the Maryland Advanced Air Mobility Council to foster growth in emerging tech sectors.
