In 1991, Lee Heikkinen and Bob Housaman founded Neu-Ion on a simple conviction: clients should be able to focus entirely on their own work, not on their water system. They built the company around great service first, taking full ownership of a client’s water quality so hospitals, laboratories, and manufacturers never had to worry about it themselves. Three decades later, Neu-Ion has grown into a premium high-purity water systems company trusted by some of the most demanding industries in the Mid-Atlantic. In 2019, leadership and ownership passed to Lee’s three children, Leslie Crotty, Kevin Heikkinen, and Krista Nazelrod, who carried that founding instinct into a second generation and gave it a name: Personalized Care, Family Promise; the same commitment their father built the company on, now defined as the standard the whole team is held to, keeping Neu-Ion women-owned, minority-certified, and unmistakably personal even as it has grown.

“Our father built this company, so clients never had to think about their water,” says Leslie Crotty, Managing Partner. “We’ve spent every day since making sure that promise scales, no matter how big we get, personalized care is still what defines us.”

That inheritance shows up in how Neu-Ion still operates: not as a manufacturer selling standardized equipment off a spec sheet, but as a partner that designs every system, and every relationship, around one client at a time.

Built Around the Client, not a Catalog

Ask Neu-Ion what it sells, and the honest answer is nothing off the shelf. Every project starts with a client’s actual water supply, its chemistry, its contaminants, its intended use and is engineered outward from there. A hospital’s core lab, a semiconductor cleanroom, and a university research lab may all need “pure water,” but they rarely need the same system, the same footprint, or the same price point.

Neu-Ion’s engineers design around three variables at once: the water quality a client must hit, the space and logistics they must work within, and the budget they’re accountable to stay within. Depending on the need, that might mean reverse osmosis paired with deionization and ion exchange to strip ions and minerals to laboratory-grade purity, ultraviolet disinfection to neutralize microorganisms without chemicals, or custom filtration built around a single facility’s specific contaminant profile. Technology is rarely the differentiator on its own, but the fit is. That’s the Family Promise applied to engineering: personalized care built into the system itself, not just into the service-call. “Two clients can ask for the same purity level and walk away with two completely different systems,” Leslie says. “We’re not designing for a catalog. We’re designing for their water, their building, their budget, and their timeline.”

Where Purity Becomes Mission-Critical

Since 1991, Neu-Ion has built its business around industries where water quality isn’t a preference, it’s a precondition: biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing, healthcare, data centers, higher education, food and beverage processing, industrial manufacturing, and government operations. In healthcare, purified water sterilizes surgical instruments, supports diagnostic laboratories, and feeds dialysis equipment that patients depend on directly; Neu-Ion engineers its systems to meet standards set by medical associations, like AAMI, and public health authorities. Data centers rely on high-purity water for steam humidification that controls static and protects sensitive hardware, an unglamorous but essential layer of infrastructure resilience. Universities need consistent water quality to keep research defensible; industrial plants need it to stop scaling and corrosion before it stops production; and government laboratories require secure, redundant, mission-ready systems that cannot be allowed to fail.

The common thread is consequence. When Neu-Ion’s systems work, no one notices. When they don’t, patient safety, research integrity, or a facility’s uptime is on the line, which is the impact the company points to when asked why the work matters, and why personalized care can’t be an afterthought in industries like these.

Service as a Promise, not a Policy

Personalized Care, Family Promise isn’t a phrase Neu-Ion keeps in a mission statement, it’s how the company operates day to day. That standard shows up as a long-term partnership rather than a vendor relationship: design and engineering consultation up front, in-house certified technicians for installation and startup, transparent pricing with no surprise costs, 24/7/365 emergency responses and reliable preventive maintenance once a system is live. “Service is more than a checklist,” Leslie says. “It’s a commitment we make on day one and keep for as long as a client is with us.”

That commitment is reinforced by Neu-Ion’s own pure water, ion exchange resin regeneration plant — the only one of its kind in Maryland — which gives the company direct control over turnaround and quality rather than relying on a third-party supply chain.

Room to Grow, Roots to Keep

Neu-Ion recently relocated its headquarters to an 18,000-square-foot facility in Baltimore’s Windsor Corporate Park, adding capacity for resin regeneration, system fabrication, testing, and inventory and bringing more than 30 employees under one roof. The expansion extends Neu-Ion’s reach across Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., while keeping the company’s production and quality control centered where it started. For the family, growth only counts if the Family Promise scales with it.

“Access to clean water should never depend on luck or location,” Leslie says. “The bigger we get, the more people we can give that personalized care to without losing what made us worth trusting in the first place.”

What Lee Heikkinen started in 1991 was never a modest ambition. He set out to build a company where clients could hand over full responsibility for their water and think about it as little as possible and he backed that promise with real service, not just a sales pitch. That is a hard thing to build and an even harder thing to sustain, and it is exactly what Neu-Ion has done for three decades and counting. Today, under the second generation of the family that built it, Neu-Ion is a premium partner to the industries that can least afford to get water wrong, larger, more capable, and more far-reaching than it has ever been. But it still runs on the same foundation Lee laid down: personalized care as the whole point, and a Family Promise the company intends to keep for as long as it exists.
