“I developed OxiWear for myself to demonstrate that I could live a normal life without letting the disease define me.”

In 2019, Shavini Fernando, a visionary innovator and determined entrepreneur, founded OxiWear – a groundbreaking company dedicated to transforming how we monitor and respond to critical health metrics. Diagnosed with severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to Eisenmenger Syndrome, Shavini faced life-threatening challenges, including cardiac arrests and strokes triggered by undetected drops in oxygen levels. Refusing to let her condition dictate her life, Shavini set out to create a solution to save her life and empower millions of others facing similar health challenges.

“OxiWear is a wearable pulse oximeter for blood oxygen monitoring during still and motion to give a timely proactive alert when someone’s oxygen levels are dropping below their safe thresholds to prevent hypoxic injuries and ultimately save lives,” Shavini explains.

A Journey Fueled by Determination

Shavini’s journey with OxiWear began as a personal mission. Confronted with the reality of her condition, her doctors advised her to alter her lifestyle drastically. But Shavini, an adrenaline junkie and a dedicated student at Georgetown University, was not ready to compromise. She created the first prototype of OxiWear to prove that she could live independently and continue her education despite the physical challenges.

“I developed OxiWear for myself to demonstrate that I could live a normal life without letting the disease define me,” she recalls. “They had said my issue wasn’t my heart rate but my oxygen levels. Since there was nothing available on the market to address this, I developed OxiWear for myself to demonstrate that I could live a normal life without letting the disease define me.”

The initial success and positive feedback from her doctors spurred Shavini to commercialize her invention. In 2019, she pitched OxiWear at Georgetown’s Bark Tank competition, winning both first prize and the people’s choice award, securing $40,000 in prize money. This pivotal moment marked the official launch of OxiWear.

Innovating for a Better Tomorrow

OxiWear’s innovative approach to health monitoring has garnered significant attention and acclaim. The device, designed as an ear-wearable accessory, offers continuous oxygen monitoring and emergency alerts, providing users with peace of mind and enhancing their safety. Its sleek, modern design ensures it can be worn comfortably and discreetly, fitting seamlessly into the user’s daily routine.

The company’s mission extends beyond individual health monitoring. OxiWear aims to reduce healthcare costs by preventing hypoxic injuries, ultimately saving lives. This commitment to innovation and social impact is evident in the numerous accolades OxiWear has received, including awards from the Leonsis Foundation, CTIA Wireless, and the American Heart Association.

Transforming Lives, One Device at a Time

Since its inception, OxiWear has made a profound impact on the lives of its users. Initially marketed as a wellness device for the fitness market, it has also become a lifeline for patients with chronic conditions. Shavini shares heartwarming stories from users who have regained confidence and independence thanks to OxiWear.

“We’ve received numerous emails and letters from people sharing their experiences. Some have taken their first flight and gone on a trip since their diagnosis. Others are now going to the gym. Many express that they can finally enjoy life with their kids without constantly checking their oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter on their finger,” she reflects.

For Shavini, the true measure of success lies in the positive impact OxiWear has on people’s lives. “A chronic condition should not define anyone’s life. Providing people with the confidence to live their normal lives, change their lives, and ultimately save lives is what excites me the most,” she states.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Triumphs

Building a startup and bringing a new idea to market is fraught with challenges. Shavini’s journey with OxiWear has been no exception. She acknowledges the hurdles but emphasizes the importance of perseverance and resilience.

“Starting a new business and running with a fresh idea is not easy. When you begin, everyone thinks you’re crazy. For every two ‘yeses’ you get, you’ll receive 80 ‘nos.’ Don’t let those ‘nos’ undermine your confidence; instead, use them as catalysts to become stronger,” Shavini advises.

Despite the setbacks, Shavini’s unwavering determination and adaptability have been vital to OxiWear’s success. She encourages aspiring innovators to remain steadfast in their pursuits, drawing inspiration from every challenge they face.

A Message of Gratitude and Inspiration

As OxiWear continues to grow and innovate, Shavini remains deeply grateful to those who have supported her journey.

“I want to thank everyone who helped me, stuck with me and my team, funded us, and believed in us. The entire OxiWear team, who stayed with me through thick and thin. At the same time, I also want to thank those who said no to us, as they were the driving force that made us give 200% and helped us get where we are,” she expresses.

OxiWear is a testament to the power of innovation, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the potential to change lives. Shavini Fernando’s journey is not just a story of personal triumph but an inspiration to all who dare to dream and work tirelessly to turn those dreams into reality.
