CHASE THE ONE PERCENT

I’ve noticed something about the way we talk about the future.

It’s always enormous. Transform everything. Ten times the output. A revolution by next quarter. The bigger the promise, the louder the room.

I spent two decades running real operations, and the truth is quieter than that. Nothing changes by ten times overnight. What actually happens, on a real floor, in a real business, is that you find one honest percent. One percent less waste. One percent more throughput. One percent fewer things going wrong at three in the morning. It isn’t glamorous. It’s just real.

Here’s what most people miss: a real one percent is enormous. In an operation of any size, one percent is millions of dollars, thousands of hours, a problem that used to wake people up at night and simply doesn’t anymore. Find it, bank it, and go get the next one. Do that a hundred times and you haven’t made a one percent improvement. You’ve changed the entire business.

I’ve watched the opposite play out too many times. Someone sells a company a number so big it could never be real, everyone celebrates the slide deck, and a year later nothing has actually moved. The moonshot was the easy part. Nobody had to live it.

That’s the difference experience makes. When you’ve actually stood on the floor, you stop chasing the number that sounds impressive and start chasing the one you can prove. You learn to respect the small, compounding wins that no one writes headlines about, because those are the ones still there a year later.

I think that’s the real opportunity in front of us. Not one miracle that changes everything at once, but the discipline to find a real percent, again and again, across every operation, every industry, and eventually across a whole economy. That isn’t a smaller ambition. It’s a bigger one. It just gets built one honest percent at a time.

So when someone promises you the moon, ask a quieter question. Show me the one percent I can bank this month. Then help me find it again next month. Do that long enough, and you won’t just improve a business. You’ll build something that lasts.
