The Quebec Film and Television Council (QFTC) has been contributing to the development and competitiveness of Quebec as a world-class audiovisual production center for over fifteen years. It supports innovation in three major economic sectors in Quebec: live action, visual effects, and animation.
In 2021, this creative and dynamic sector in Quebec represented nearly 55,000 jobs1, for a volume of activity of nearly 2.5 billion dollars2. Its live action, visual effects and animation studios are recognized worldwide, as evidenced by the blockbuster films and series that have benefited from their services: Transformers 7: Rise of the Beasts (2021), Three Pines (2021), Stranger Things (2016-2022), to name a few. In addition, several Quebec intellectual properties have been able to make Quebec shine beyond its borders, such as Cracké (2016-2022), Agent Jean! (2018- 2022) and Félix et le trésor de Morgäa (2021).
The QFTC contributes to this dynamism by supporting the audiovisual industry in two major ways:
• Film commission and promotion services that highlight the advantages of filming in Quebec an extraordinary architectural diversity, a skilled workforce, a world-class infrastructure, a high-end professional environment and one of the best visual effects ecosystems in the world. Thanks to these services, in 2021, the QFTC was able to attract 21 foreign film shootings, generating more than $470 million in investment.
• An audiovisual cluster which stimulates the evolution of the audiovisual industry in Quebec, notably through the study of new major developments. To this end, the QFTC organizes consultation activities leading to the establishment of measures to support market growth: round tables, assessments, action plans, and recommendations to the government.
Since its creation, the QFTC has encouraged many technological advances in the audiovisual industry. In 2021 it conducted a study on the integration of artificial intelligence in the visual effects and animation sectors. Not only does this study provide an overall picture of trends, but it also includes a short, medium, and long-term action plan.
Contemporary concerns, such as the fight against climate change, are also at the heart of the QFTC’s mission. In 2020, in partnership with the Conseil québécois des événements écoresponsables and Quebecor, the QFTC launched the Rolling Green program, which aims to facilitate the adoption of eco-responsible actions for audiovisual productions, notably through an accreditation system.
Today the QFTC is a leader in the Quebec audiovisual industry. Thanks to its culture of innovation, it succeeds year after year in promoting Quebec’s know-how on the local, national, and international scenes!
