STL Tech Ltd is a rapidly growing engineering and technology services company, housed within Unit DX at the heart of Bristol’s innovation ecosystem. STL Tech’s technical and commercial team draws on a broad collective experience to deliver bespoke projects requiring software development, AI/Machine Learning, electronics and mechatronics design, process engineering, computational fluid dynamics and control system design, in addition to assisting early-stage engineering and technology companies with investment and business development support.
Pete Stirling, Founder and Managing Director
STL Tech can trace its history back to the formation of Bristol-based Stirling Dynamics in 1987. In 2016, following five years at Stirling Dynamics, Pete Stirling left his father’s business to form STL, with the goal of providing engineering and business support services to the Southwest’s growing innovation community. In addition to being founder and Managing Director of STL Tech, Pete is also an active early-stage investor with strong links with the Bristol Private Equity Club (BPEC) and is an advisory board member of Unit DX, an incubator home to more than 30 science and engineering startups, including STL Tech. This combination of location, commercial awareness, extended network and the expertise provided by a technical team experienced in high-end design and engineering provides STL Tech with a unique opportunity to effectively collaborate with a diverse range of companies on projects related to renewables, aerospace and other advanced engineering sectors. STL Tech’s in-house resource is further supported by a pool of collaboration partners and experienced consultants who can be drawn upon to support specific projects as required.
STL was awarded two Innovate UK grants in 2016 and then 2018 and has additionally won a number of commercial engineering services and business support contracts. STL’s flagship ‘HiLeak’ project is a Newton Fund-supported collaboration with partners in the UK and Malaysia, due to be completed in 2020. HiLeak will substantially reduce clean water lost from Malaysia’s water distribution network by providing an automatic, Internet of Things-enabled system for continuous leak detection and structural health assessment of water-filled PE pipes, using a series of collars which ‘listen’ for cracks developing using acoustic emission and ultrasound-based sensing. The wireless sensor network will be supported by cloud-based data collection and storage and AI-driven data analysis.
Other ongoing projects include subcontracted control system design for wave and tidal energy installations being developed by established engineering companies, engineering design and modelling for a composites recycling process and development of an automated manufacturing system for composites layup.
STL Tech is currently experiencing significant growth in terms of recruitment and revenue and is rapidly establishing a strong track record in project delivery.
