INNOVATE® Kansas City

When the future of work spilled out of traditional offices and into vibrant spaces where community mattered as much as connectivity, Spark Coworking emerged as a beacon for entrepreneurs, creatives, and innovators. Launched in 2016 by The Cordish Companies, Spark has grown into a national network of collaborative workspaces – and Kansas City’s location is one of its brightest stars.

“I always say Spark isn’t just a place to work,” explains Shervonne Cherry, National Director of Community & Partnerships. “It’s a place where people come to build, to connect, and to grow – together.”

A Built-in Community in Downtown Kansas City

Spark’s Kansas City outpost sits in the Two Light luxury residential building, right in the hustle and pulse of the Power & Light District – a nine-block entertainment, dining, and cultural hub developed by The Cordish Companies. Shervonne describes the strategic choice: “We wanted a space that reflected the energy of this city: connected, dynamic, and rooted in the fabric of downtown.”

The result is a two-level collaborative workspace designed to blur the lines between living, working, and playing. Members enjoy instant proximity to hundreds of local businesses and experiences, from startups and restaurants to show venues and residential life.

Spaces That Inspire Every Kind of Work

Inside Spark, the atmosphere is anything but generic cubicle culture. Instead, it feels like a crossroads of innovation – where private offices, large suites, event space, and huddle rooms live under one roof. Highspeed internet, gourmet coffee, and casual lounge areas create a rhythm that feels both professional and creative.

Shervonne paints a clear picture: “When someone walks in here for the first time, they always say they feel the energy. That’s intentional. We design spaces that make people want to be productive, but also want to be part of something bigger.”

Conference rooms with AV and dry-erase walls sit alongside open community areas for informal brainstorming sessions. A kitchen lounge becomes a favorite gathering spot for spontaneous conversations – and often, new collaborations.

Memberships for Every Stage of Growth

What makes Spark unique, Shervonne says, is its range of membership types tailored to different stages of business.

“Whether you’re testing an idea or scaling a team,” she explains, “we meet people where they are.” At the entry level, flexible day passes offer plug-and-play access for visits as needed. For consistent work habits, undedicated workspace and productive community space provides reliable daily space. And for teams or established companies, a spectrum of private offices and suites offers scalable, professional space designed to grow with a business.

Even a basic mailbox membership gives startups a professional business address at a fraction of the cost of a private lease – a subtle but strategic advantage for small teams.

Shervonne reflects on the philosophy: “Coworking isn’t one-size-fits-all. We aim to make Spark accessible to every creator, from freelancers to corporates.”

Corporate Program: Flexible Modern Work

As traditional offices evolve, Spark’s Flex Growth Suites have become a powerful draw for larger teams seeking adaptable, collaborative workspace solutions. With hybrid work now the norm, Spark provides safe, fully equipped environments where teams can meet, create, and stay productive without the rigidity of long-term leases. “Companies today need flexibility,” Shervonne says.

They need space that supports both on-site collaboration and remote work rhythms. Our Flex Growth Suites bridges that gap with inclusivity, flexibility and adaptability.

From conference rooms booked on demand to full team plans that include access to Spark’s national network of locations, the corporate offerings ensure Spark remains relevant to innovators at scale.

Partnerships That Elevate the Experience

Beyond desks and meeting rooms, Spark thrives on local connections. Partnerships with Organizations like launch groups, community leaders, and industry networks animate Spark KC’s calendar with events, speaker sessions, after-hours meetups, and educational programs.

“For us,” she says, “it’s not just about space. It’s about community.” That manifests in curated events that connect founders with investors, creatives with collaborators, and entrepreneurs with insights. Members often say the value of Spark comes as much from these connections as from the workspace itself.

Why Cordish Built Spark – and Why It Matters

To understand Spark’s deeper purpose, you have to understand its roots. The Cordish Companies, a family-owned real estate and entertainment developer founded in 1910, has long blended vibrancy with strategic innovation. From mixed-use entertainment districts to luxury residences, Cordish projects shape community life in cities across America.

In 2016, Cordish saw an opportunity to extend that philosophy into work culture. Rather than building yet another office tower, they launched Spark to create spaces that would energize the local entrepreneurial ecosystem – first in Baltimore, Maryland, and then in other cities like Kansas City, Missouri, St. Louis, Missouri, and Arlington, Texas.

“We were building districts full of life and connection,” she explains, “but we knew that economic innovation couldn’t thrive without spaces designed for collaboration and growth. Spark is our answer to that. It’s a physical expression of what cities need to uplift their creative economies.”

This vision has paid off. Spark’s nationwide footprint now supports hundreds of companies and more than a thousand members, all plugged into their local communities while benefiting from a wider network of innovators across markets.

A Future Built on Collaboration

Today, Spark Coworking stands as a vibrant chapter in Kansas City’s innovation story. With its deeply rooted location, flexible memberships, community-focused programs, and forward-thinking corporate offerings, Spark continues to redefine what work looks like in the 21st century.

Shervonne nails the sentiment: “We’re more than an office space. We’re a catalyst. A connector. A community. And that’s what keeps people coming through our doors each day.”
