Rather than extracting value from these communities, SHIFT chose a different path: acquiring approximately two million square feet of real estate and transforming it through adaptive reuse, transit-oriented development, and creative community partnerships.
Among its most recognized projects are MaKen Studios, a pair of adaptive reuse industrial buildings on I Street that together provide nearly 260,000 square feet of space for makers, artists, light manufacturers, and community-serving nonprofits.
