Rumpus Animation was founded in 2011 by animation director Joe Wood and children’s book illustrator Seb Burnett after working together at several studios.
Both had moved to Bristol to study animation, lured by the reputation the city has for creativity. Bristol seemed like the perfect place to start their own studio, due to the pool of creative talent and the city’s quirky spirit, and after a few years working out of their spare rooms they moved into a space on Park Street where they have remained and grown for the last 7 years.
Known for creating enchanting and delightful worlds Rumpus have worked on a diverse and varied range of projects that have reached a global audience.
Our ethos has always been to make high quality, character-driven stories with fun at their heart. From music videos, short films, children’s TV shows and games we put a dollop of love into everything.
Collaboration has always been important to us and we work with talented creatives, makers and designers from all over the world to create memorable characters in a range of styles and mediums, from puppetry to digital and handmade animation and even the World’s first stop-motion Flash animation.
Rumpus are always looking for new and innovative ways to tell stories and in 2013 seeing the uptake in mobile tablets we began developing narrative games. Our first, based on The Adventures of hapless Victorian Explorer Bertram Fiddle, was released in 2014 and was featured as best new game on iOS AppStore. Like an interactive animated feature film, it’s blend of peculiar puzzles and comedy storyline led it to have over 200,000 downloads worldwide. The Bertram Fiddle games are now available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and Mobile and the IP is now being developed into comics and books with a potential TV series in the pipeline.
Following the success of Bertram, we set up a team focused on providing animation for other games studios and are currently working on the hotly anticipated Xbox exclusive Battletoads remake along with some narrative indie titles.
Our little studio has expanded enough now so that we are able to develop new game and film ideas alongside regular client work, in just the last six months we’ve worked with some wonderful clients on a broad range of commercial and broadcast content from healthcare to herbal tea, charities to Cbeebies. Our goal is to produce our own Children’s TV series and release another original game within the next 5 years, so keep checking back to see what we are up to.
