From Services Firm to Innovation Engine
Noblis’ early years were defined by exceptional technical delivery. But in the early 2010s, the organization made a deliberate shift that changed how it operates. “We realized innovation couldn’t sit off to the side as solely a research and development function,” Mile explains. “And, these innovations had to transition quickly to solve problems ahead of mission need.”
The company formalized its Noblis Sponsored Research (NSR) program and established Centers of Excellence, integrating internal research directly into mission delivery. Instead of separating research from operations, Noblis began using its own enterprise as a proving ground for emerging technologies before deploying them for customers.
The result was a reinforcing cycle. Research strengthened customer solutions, and real-world challenges sparked new lines of inquiry. Innovation became embedded in how the organization works.
“Innovation isn’t an initiative at Noblis,” Mile says. “It’s in our DNA.”
The Cornerstone: Noblis Sponsored Research
At the heart of Noblis’ innovation model is its deep innovation portfolio fueled by direct funding from government customers and its own Noblis Sponsored Research (NSR) program. The structure is intentional. It reflects the belief that the best ideas often come from unexpected places. By inviting participation across disciplines and experience levels, Noblis fosters collaboration that mirrors the complexity of national challenges. With a lab-to-mission mindset, teams advance technologies in areas that reflect the current and future needs of our customers, such as artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, bioscience, cybersecurity, aerospace systems, autonomous platforms and more. Integrated labs and high-performance computing environments enable rapid prototyping, modeling, and simulation.
“It’s critical to have a balanced portfolio and that extends to innovation – I’ve been focused on growing internally funded innovation and our traction with government-sponsored programs – pairing the speed of exploration with the discipline of mission-driven execution to accelerate the path from discovery to real-world impact”, Mile says.
During her tenure, she has aggressively focused on structuring a balanced innovation portfolio with investments designed to transition quickly to real-world impact alongside self-funded R&D that keeps the system from converging too early – to inject optionality, velocity, and durability into the innovation pipeline. Each year, dozens of projects emerge from across the organization, open to employees at all levels and across mission areas. As a nonprofit, Noblis reinvests its earnings directly into research, laboratories, technology infrastructure, and its people, strengthening the capabilities that set it apart. The model supports both long-term innovation and near-term mission delivery.
Expanding the Innovation Pipeline
In 2023, Mile Corrigan expanded its innovation ecosystem with the launch of Noblis Ventures as one of her first moves as President and CEO. Noblis Ventures connects early-stage deep technology companies with critical government missions, accelerating the transition from promising concepts to deployed capabilities.
“We saw an opportunity to better connect the entrepreneurial ecosystem with national missions,” Mile says. “Breakthrough technologies should not sit idle and the ecosystem needs more strategic investors willing to invest in early-stage cutting-edge capabilities critical missions need now and into the future.”
Through strategic growth and expanded capabilities, Noblis has significantly increased its scale and reach since its founding, supporting missions across national security, defense, intelligence, healthcare, space systems, and cybersecurity. As the organization celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, it remains focused on the convergence of people, mission, and possibility.
