Newlab is a global network of purpose-built innovation hubs that accelerates climate and deep tech time-to-market. Newlab provides startups with physical infrastructure, direct investment opportunities, and pilot partnerships to drive meaningful commercialization outcomes and economic development in energy, materials, and mobility.

Newlab established its Detroit home in 2023 to enable the next chapter in the city’s rich automotive history. The transportation sector currently accounts for 28% of global GHG emissions and relies on more fossil fuels than any other sector, leaving a vast opportunity for startups advancing sustainable electrification, fuels, urban infrastructure, logistics, and more. Newlab and Michigan Central work together to remove barriers for promising founders by providing resources and bringing them together with the most innovative corporations and motivated government bodies to solve these climate challenges.

Newlab offers state-of-the-art prototyping equipment and labs, all within one of Detroit’s architectural gems—a historic, Albert-Kahn designed post office and book depository. After sitting abandoned for nearly four decades, the building was transformed into Newlab and was the first building to open on Ford’s billion-dollar mobility innovation district. Today, Newlab is a 270,000 square foot facility within Michigan Central’s 30-acre site and sits within a special Transportation Innovation Zone, offering unparalleled real-world conditions and fast-tracked permitting for urban mobility piloting.

Only one year after opening, Newlab Detroit was home to over 90 startups who had collectively raised over $600M in that time, officially establishing Detroit on the global innovation stage.
