Mila is a Montreal-based artificial intelligence research institute whose mission is to be a global centre for scientific advances that inspire innovation and the development of AI for the benefit of all.
Numerous breakthroughs have resulted in prominently situating Mila as a world leader, namely, the development of novel machine learning algorithms applicable to many fields, such as language modeling, machine translation, object recognition, generative modeling with structured output, and natural language recognition.
Founded by the Université de Montréal and McGill University, with the support of HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, the institute is the first of its kind to bring together the strengths of these institutions for fundamental research in artificial intelligence in an off-campus location. In order to yield economic results from this bolstered research capacity, Mila relies on a team of experts dedicated to solving industrial problems using approaches grounded in machine learning.
“With the highest concentration of academic researchers in machine learning in the world and a thriving research environment, Mila has carved out an international niche in the AI sector,” says Valérie Pisano, President and CEO of Mila.
The Mila family now gathers over 600 members and 56 industry partners. Mila hosts research professors, masters, doctoral and postdoctoral student researchers, and technology development experts. It also houses a team of scientists who carry out applied research projects in collaboration with industrial partners. The Espace CDPQ | Axe IA, a space within Mila dedicated to developing student-run startups to promote networking and foster creativity and innovation, accommodates 18 startups and a dozen corporate laboratories.
Through its unique model, Mila has created an innovative research environment and fostered an active community of researchers committed to AI for humanity projects. These efforts allow Mila to contribute to the broader social dialogue and the development of applications that will benefit society, in accordance with the principles of the Montreal Declaration.
Mila is funded by the government of Quebec via the Strategy for the development of the Quebec artificial intelligence ecosystem of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, as well as by the government of Canada through the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), and through private funding.
