QUEBEC ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INSTITUTE IS THE EPICENTRE OF CANADA’S EXPERTISE IN DEEP LEARNING

Led by Professor Yoshua Bengio, co-recipient of the 2018 A.M. Turing Award for his groundbreaking work on deep learning, Mila is a community of over 1,000 of some of the world’s best AI researchers.

This concentration of experts carrying out cuttingedge work allowed Quebec to become a global hub in fundamental and applied AI research.

In recent years, more than 2,500 scientific articles written by Mila researchers have been published in journals or conferences, including hundreds within the scope of NeurIPS, ICLR and ICML.

Projects at the intersection of AI and health, biotechnology and the environment are some of the highest priorities of Mila’s research teams.

A Unique AI Hub
Mila is a non-profit stemming from a unique collaboration between Université de Montréal, McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal. The institute also hosts professors from Université Laval in Québec City, Université de Sherbrooke and the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal.

Mila also joins forces with more than 100 industrial partners on collaborative, applied and fundamental research projects.

The Mila team has worked with hundreds of SMEs across Canada, including through the IRAP interactive visit program. It also runs demo programs for SMEs through its AI Activation Program, in addition to working with more established companies on complex AI projects to take them to the next step of their AI journey.

Since 2018, more than 30 international technology companies have set up an AI research laboratory or a place of business in Montreal, including several on Mila’s premises, confirming its attractiveness.

The institute also collaborates with international organizations such as the OECD, UNESCO and UN Habitat on regulatory framework questions and ethical issues around AI.

Mila will also play an important advisory role at the international level in high-level discussions on the responsible and socially beneficial development of AI.
