INNOVATE® Kansas City

When Made in KC launched in 2015, it redefined the local economy and fostered a community of creators ever since. It has emerged not just as a business but as a catalyst for creativity, turning a 300-square-foot pop-up shop into a sprawling network that champions local artists, designers, and makers.

The Rise of a Local Titan

Made in KC’s journey stands as a powerful vision coupled with relentless dedication. Keith Bradley, Tyler Enders, and Thomas McIntyre co-founded the business and helped it become successful today. What started as a singular outlet in Overland Park swiftly expanded into a constellation of locations across the metro, each uniquely contributing to the local economy and culture. It became synonymous with the essence of Kansas City’s spirit, from marketplace stores complete with cafes and bars to cozy neighborhood gift shops.

Co-founder and owner Keith Bradley shares Made in KC’s mission: “Knowing that local artists, makers, and designers face a variety of challenges and hurdles to starting and running a business, Made in KC provides a robust platform for those creative and talented individuals and companies to sell their products and continue to focus on creating and innovating.”

A Platform for Prosperity

Boasting collaborations with over 300 local talents, Made in KC transcends the conventional retail model. It’s a robust platform where artists and entrepreneurs can flourish, liberated from the economic strains often associated with creative endeavors. By meticulously curating products and fostering partnerships, Made in KC showcases the city’s rich tapestry of talent and ensures that a significant portion of every dollar spent circulates within the local economy.

“Made in KC curates its product from hundreds of submissions and works to support brands through partnerships, relationships, and resources,” emphasizes Tyler Enders, co-founder and owner. “The artists we work with make or design their products in the Kansas City metro area and may source some parts of their products outside Kansas City when a non-local option is not available or extremely cost prohibitive. We work actively to build our network of vendors and resources so that we can help brands grow their sales but also build a more sustainable business.”

Innovation at Its Core

Revolutionizing retail by intertwining a community-centric approach with strategic digital expansion, Made in KC forges a unique ecosystem that connects consumers directly with local creators. This model transcends traditional shopping, turning each purchase into a meaningful act of support for Kansas City’s economy and creativity. By blending physical stores with an online marketplace, Made in KC extends its reach, allowing local artisans to showcase their work to a broader audience. This seamless integration of digital and physical realms ensures that Made in KC remains at the forefront of retail innovation, catering to modern consumers’ preferences while fostering a deep sense of community.

The company’s commitment to collaboration and sustainability further distinguishes its business model. Viewing other local businesses as partners rather than competitors, Made in KC creates a collaborative network that drives mutual growth and innovation. This ecosystem approach, coupled with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, sets a new standard for retail. Sustainable practices, from sourcing products locally to prioritizing eco-friendly materials, underscore Made in KC’s dedication not only to the economic vitality of Kansas City but also to the health of the planet, embodying a model for future businesses aiming to combine economic success with environmental responsibility.

Impact Beyond the Dollar

Made in KC’s influence extends far beyond its economic contributions. The company embodies the essence of civic pride, championing the virtues of shopping locally not as a marketing strategy but as a fundamental belief in the inherent value of community. With staggering figures showing that Made in KC recirculates over $93 back into the local economy for every $100 spent, it’s clear that the impact of choosing local is profound.

A Community United

At the heart of Made in KC’s narrative is the community it serves. Through initiatives like offering gift baskets to welcome new residents and partnering with local companies, Made in KC fosters a sense of belonging and pride among Kansas Citians. It’s a celebration of the city’s creativity, resilience, and collective spirit, showcased through the portraits of local artists and entrepreneurs that adorn its spaces.

Looking Ahead

As Made in KC continues to grow, so does its commitment to the community. The pursuit of further research into the economic impacts of local shopping, in partnership with organizations like the Kauffman Foundation, underscores its dedication to sustaining and enriching Kansas City’s fabric. It’s a journey of discovery, innovation, and, above all, community.
