True innovation is rarely the result of a single breakthrough idea.
It emerges when creative thinkers, businesses, educators, and communities come together to explore possibilities, challenge assumptions, share perspectives, and build on one another’s strengths. The impact of thought leadership comes from uniting people and ideas in ways that transform promising concepts into meaningful outcomes. The most successful innovations are born from communities of people working together to explore new possibilities and turn collective insight into lasting impact.
For more than 25 years, New Media Manitoba (NMM) has supported the growth of Manitoba’s Interactive Digital Media (IDM) industry. Over that time, we have witnessed firsthand how the convergence of creativity and technology can transform industries, create opportunities, and strengthen communities. Today, that transformation is happening faster than ever.
The digital economy now touches nearly every sector. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual production, real-time 3D visualization, and immersive experiences are reshaping how we create, communicate, learn, and solve problems. At NMM, our role is to create the conditions that help Manitoba’s companies and workforce adopt new technologies, apply them, and innovate with confidence.
A defining example is NMM’s StudioLab xR (SLXR), Manitoba’s first integrated extended reality (xr), virtual production, AI, and real-time 3D innovation facility. What began as a resource for the IDM industry has evolved into a shared innovation hub serving organizations across Manitoba. Through this facility and programs such as StoryLab, Virtual Production CoLab, AI Interactive, GameBiz Lab, and IDM CreatorLab, we help individuals and organizations gain practical experience with emerging technologies while building valuable connections across sectors.
The results demonstrate what is possible when new technologies are accessible. Businesses are developing new products, improving operations, attracting investment, and expanding into new markets. Professionals and students are gaining hands-on skills that prepare them for careers in a rapidly evolving workforce. Industry, education, government, and community partners are collaborating in new ways to tackle shared challenges.
Seeing organizations embrace these tools to enhance learning, planning, collaboration, and growth reinforces the importance of building access to technologies that drive innovation. From construction and architecture, to agriculture, bioscience, transportation, and cultural preservation, Manitoba organizations are finding creative ways to leverage advanced technology to improve planning, training, decision-making, and storytelling.
Equally important is our commitment to ensuring inclusivity. Through partnerships with Indigenous creators, educators, and community organizations, we are supporting digital skills development, cultural preservation, and new pathways into high-value careers while helping ensure diverse voices shape future innovation.
Manitoba’s innovation story is driven by talented people, collaborative partnerships, and a culture of curiosity and continuous learning. Through sustained investment in talent development, technology adoption, and cross-sector collaboration, we are creating new opportunities for businesses and communities while strengthening Manitoba’s position as a centre for innovation and economic growth.
