“REGARDING LOGISTICAL INNOVATION, FLANDERS HAS GROWN FROM A FOLLOWER TO A LOGISTICAL POWERHOUSE IN JUST A FEW YEARS.”

As Featured:

Global logistics is facing strong growth, even in uncertain times, and an ever-increasing demand for quality and speed of service, and to do so in a way that does not strain our overall quality of life. The focus here must be on sustainability.

The aim is to make the best possible use of the integrated networks and the available space and capacity in function of both internal and external costs. Technological innovation and digitalization are important levers here. Many entrepreneurs and companies are well aware of these challenges as a result of the increasingly rapid succession of supply chain disruptions. They are also willing to invest in new technology and supply chain concepts but often cannot see the wood through the trees.

In Flanders, spearhead clusters (such as VIL), knowledge institutions and innovative companies, supported by the Flemish government, are pursuing an integrated approach in which collaboration is strongly encouraged. Such cooperation leads to more and better results. This Flemish vision of joining forces in innovation also attracts high praise abroad.

Regarding logistical innovation, Flanders has grown from a follower to a logistical powerhouse in just a few years. Whereas in the past logistical innovation was shared very reluctantly or there was very little participation in international research and development, more and more players are taking a leading role. This is the case both in international networks and consultation bodies and in European innovation projects in which more and more (air) ports, spearhead clusters, strategic research centres and companies are key players or even leading forces. It is therefore by taking an active role in these international innovation processes that Flanders can connect with the most important developments within the areas of interest for the global logistics and supply chain.

It is also an excellent opportunity for Flemish companies and knowledge institutions to demonstrate their leadership in several key domains. The challenges ahead are global. Taking an active role in these international cooperation initiatives always implies a great opportunity to valorize the innovation efforts. There are many opportunities in innovation projects. For example for projects focussing on the crucial role of logistics in realizing the circular economy and involving all stakeholders in implementing new transport solutions. Also for the last/first meter, for setting up transport chains in which flexibility and resilience are inherently embedded in the model, for the extensive automation in logistics operations and how this can improve seamless cooperation between the chain partners, or for projects that explore how data can be handled and how this data can be a building block of truly dynamic logistics solutions.

As the spearhead logistics cluster, we are therefore pleased to note that our Flemish companies, port and infrastructure operators, knowledge institutions, research centres and the spearhead cluster itself are taking an increasingly prominent role in these initiatives and profiling themselves as innovation leaders.
