Established in 2012 by the cities of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, KC Digital Drive serves as a regional technology and innovation intermediary. While technologies evolve and community needs change, its purpose has remained constant: helping cities and communities prepare for the future by bringing together the people, ideas, and resources needed to solve emerging challenges.
The organization’s work begins by listening and relationship building. Whether the challenge comes from a neighborhood, a researcher, an entrepreneur, a nonprofit, or a local government, KC Digital Drive often shows up long before there is funding, a formal initiative, or even agreement about what the solution should be. Acting as a civic first responder, the organization helps define the opportunity, brings the right people to the table, identifies resources and expertise, and nurtures promising ideas
until they become sustainable programs, organizations, or public-private partnerships. Sometimes KC Digital Drive continues leading the work. Often it intentionally hands it off once a permanent home is established. “Our best projects usually begin before there’s funding, before there’s a roadmap, and sometimes before anyone knows who should lead. We help communities move from possibility to progress.”
Innovation Starts with Community
No two projects look alike because no two community challenges are alike. One initiative may help young people reach after-school opportunities through new transportation technology. Another may develop digital tools that help attorneys guide residents through criminal record expungement. Others have advanced air-quality monitoring in underserved neighborhoods, expanded breast cancer
screening technology into rural communities, supported entrepreneurs commercializing university research, helped cities prepare for broadband adoption, or equipped nonprofits with devices, digital skills, and technical support for the people they serve. “The projects change. The purpose doesn’t. Whether we’re working with entrepreneurs, researchers, cities, or neighborhoods, our job is to help Kansas City prepare for what’s next.”
A Civic Innovation Intermediary
KC Digital Drive occupies a unique role within the region’s innovation ecosystem. Rather than serving as a traditional nonprofit, economic development organization, or technology incubator, it connects people, institutions, and ideas that might not otherwise come together.
KC Digital Drive brings together universities, entrepreneurs, corporations, governments, philanthropies, and community organizations around shared challenges, but convening is only the beginning.
The organization also serves as a project partner and implementation team, helping move promising ideas from concept to execution.

Digital Inclusion ensures that residents and communities can participate fully in that future. Working alongside governments, schools, healthcare providers, libraries, employers, and community organizations, KC Digital Drive expands access to technology, digital skills, connectivity, and the support systems people need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. By reducing barriers to participation, the organization helps ensure that the benefits of innovation are accessible to everyone.
