AN INNOVATOR OF INDUSTRY
‘’INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (IP) IS MORE CRUCIAL THAN EVER FOR COMPANIES.’’

No matter how big or small, they face strong competition in an unstable environment. In this context, the development of an IP strategy is essential to establish a path to the market. Although IP is a current topic in the business world, it is still too often misunderstood.

According to the Institut de la statistique du Québec, in 2019, at least one in two companies considered IP to be important for brand image protection (56.2%), competitiveness (52.0%) and marketing (52.2%). On the other hand, less than a quarter of companies in Quebec held an IP licence. Canada underperforms as well in terms of the number of IP rights and patent applications in relation to its major R&D investments. Consequently, in Quebec and Canada, despite recognition of the economic value of these intangible assets, they are still too often overlooked, underestimated and under-exploited.

Statistics also show that many Quebec innovations are still too often transferred to foreign companies with well-established IP strategies, which reduces the benefits for Quebec society. To limit this impact, it will be essential to simplify the process of identifying, maturing and transferring high-potential inventions arising from Quebec public research. It has also been established that the success of an invention transfer ecosystem depends on the strength and quality of the stakeholders involved. Full potential is reached when all components work together effectively and at the right time.

The Quebec government has placed innovation at the heart of its economic vision, with the aim of making Quebec society wealthier. In keeping with this objective, the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie du Québec has mandated Axelys to develop a strategy for the adoption of best practices in IP management. The goal is to maximize the societal impact of projects arising from our partner research establishments. Our high-potential inventions must be fully exploited to solve problems or awaken untapped potential.

It’s by proposing audacious and courageous innovation policies that Quebec will be able to fully express its uniqueness, its richness in public research and its profound creativity, by aiming to increase the prosperity of our beautiful province.
