The Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024. Attached to the Université du Québec à Rimouski, ISMER is a world reference in research, training and innovation in marine sciences in a sustainable development and climate change perspective.

ISMER is the most important French-speaking academic research institute in marine sciences in Canada. Since its creation on March 1, 1999, its researchers have all been driven by a spirit of innovation and collaboration. In a quarter of a century, their contribution to the advancement of knowledge of marine and coastal environments and on the impacts of human activity on ecosystems has been major in both basic and applied research.

Supported by a team of committed technical and administrative staff, ISMER has close to 30 faculty members and more than 40 adjunct professors. Their work is conducted in Quebec, Canada and around the world and focuses on key issues such as climate change, the development of marine bioresources and biotechnologies, natural hazards, fisheries and aquaculture, plastics and emerging pollutants, and the dynamics of marine environments.

In addition to advancing knowledge and developing new technologies in the maritime field, ISMER trains the next generation of marine scientists. Since the creation of the Institute, nearly 700 students have obtained a graduate degree in oceanography. These graduates have gone on to careers in research organizations, companies, ministries, and public and academic organizations around the world.

If ISMER stands out for its researchers, it also has state-of-the-art research infrastructures that are often unique in Canada. Its laboratories, aquaculture station and oceanographic vessel Coriolis II are world-class infrastructures. To learn more about the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski, visit www.ismer.ca.
