The IRCM is a love story that has endured for over half a century between Quebec and Canada on the one hand, and high-level research and the most advanced clinical care on the other. Founded in 1967 by the great researcher and humanist, Dr. Jacques Genest, the IRCM became the first center in Quebec to bring together basic scientists and clinicians, with the aim of working on multiple fronts to better our understanding of some of the worst diseases afflicting humanity. Cancer, metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases, and rare diseases are just a few of our scientists’ many specializations. Some of the most renowned researchers have worked within the confines of the IRCM and, in some cases, have taken residency for life: Dr. Nabil Seidah, whose discoveries have revolutionized our knowledge of convertase proteins, and Dr. Jean Davignon, a precursor of the knowledge of hyperlipidemia, are but two examples. Over the decades, this jewel of Quebec’s scientific community, established in the heart of Montreal, has grown and evolved towards a modern approach that can integrate cutting-edge technologies and best practices in the field of scientific research.

With its 34 laboratories and clinic, the IRCM, which has been widely cited in the media, is at the forefront of research on such topics as RNA and even monoclonal antibodies, whose potential is only just beginning to be understood. From the laboratory to the patient, the relevance of the IRCM’s work sets it apart and its community is recognized year after year by some of the most prestigious awards in the field (10 Québec Science Discoveries of the Year, Prix du Québec, Canada Research Chair, etc.). Deeply rooted in the belief that science must be shared with the masses, the IRCM is a center for research that serves to cultivate the general public’s understanding of scientific results while contributing to the development of a strong and diversified next generation of researchers.

The IRCM is firmly anchored in a modern vision of science, making the commercialization of its researchers’ work toward the socio-economic development of Quebec one of its top priorities, while cultivating successful partnerships in accordance with a humanistic vision of its mission. It is with this in mind that the IRCM’s Technology Transfer Office promotes the use of intellectual property and innovative discoveries stemming from research conducted within its walls to develop synergies between IRCM researchers and industry partners.
