Located in the heart of the Montreal Botanical Garden, the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale (IRBV) is a non-profit organization resulting from a partnership between the Université de Montréal and the Montreal Botanical Garden (Space for life, City of Montreal). For over 100 years, it has been a center of excellence in research and teaching. It brings together research teams led by twenty-one researchers with diverse but complementary expertise in plant sciences. Their research topics cover a wide spectrum of disciplines including genomics, molecular biology, physiology, functional biodiversity, plant science, biological control and ecology. These studies are both fundamental and applied in nature. Today, the Institute has a staff of about 300 people: researchers, students, postdoctoral fellows, research and administrative personnel.
The IRBV has state-of-the-art genomics laboratories, various platforms (plant cultures, microscopy, phytozone) and a Biodiversity Centre hosting major collections of plants, insects and fungi.
The IRBV is an important source of innovation in the fields of phytotechnologies (soil decontamination, noise barriers, filtering marshes, and vegetation management), genomics, ecology and biodiversity, notably by developing tools for remote sensing of biodiversity. Research is funded by various levels of government (municipal, provincial, federal) and numerous research contracts with the private sector.
