Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of watching extraordinary ideas become reality. I’ve seen entrepreneurs build companies from sketches on whiteboards, researchers solve problems once thought impossible, and technologies transform industries in ways few could have imagined.

Those experiences have shaped how I think about innovation.

Innovation Begins with Purpose

When people ask me what innovation means, they often expect me to talk about artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or the latest technological breakthrough. Instead, I talk about purpose.

To me, innovation has never been about creating technology simply because we can. Its true value lies in solving problems that matter. The most meaningful innovations are measured not by their complexity, but by the lives they improve, the opportunities they create, and the challenges they help us overcome.

That belief is one of the reasons Northern Virginia has become one of the world’s most extraordinary innovation communities.

Our region brings together something few places can replicate. Sitting at the doorstep of our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia occupies a unique position at the intersection of technology, business, public policy, and national missions. Northern Virginia is already recognized as a global leader in cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure. Increasingly, it is also becoming the nation’s center for mission tech which are dual use technologies developed to serve both commercial markets and critical missions. Whether protecting our military professionals, securing critical infrastructure, modernizing government, or revitalizing America’s industrial base, mission tech demonstrates that commercial innovation and national purpose can work hand in hand.

The Future Is Built Together

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that the biggest breakthroughs rarely happen in isolation. They happen when people with different experiences, perspectives, and expertise come together to solve problems that no one organization could solve alone.

As one of the world’s leading technology regions, Northern Virginia has both an extraordinary opportunity and an important responsibility. Our success will not be measured solely by the companies we build or the technologies we invent.
