Our multidisciplinary team at the Institut des communications graphiques et de l’imprimabilité (ICI) specializes in industrialization, advanced additive manufacturing using rotary additive processes, the graphic chain, ink formulation and printed electronics.
Concrete action!
In order to assess the end-of-life impact of the printed smart labels we produce—to be integrated on a large scale to ensure food traceability and safety—we and Innofibre, a CCTT expert in cellulosic fibre recycling, have pooled our expertise as part of a research and transfer assistance program of the ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur.
Using life-cycle analysis coupled with industrial trials, we together have successfully demonstrated that manufacturing printed electronics on plastic substrates (PET), in the form of a smart label affixed to packaging boxes, had no negative impact on the recycling of cellulose fibres, in accordance with recyclability standards. In addition, we were able to identify the components with the greatest environmental impact, allowing us to propose targeted improvements in environmental performance with encapsulation materials that are made from bio-based materials and have a lower end-of-life impact.
