Hexagram is an interuniversity strategic network of the Fonds de recherche du Québec dedicated to research-creation addressing the relationships between the arts, cultures and technologies. Founded in 2001, the network comprises of 45 member co-investigators and nearly 200 student members from eight partner institutions of higher education in Québec: Université du Québec à Montréal, Concordia University, Université de Montréal, École de technologie supérieure, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Université Laval and McGill University. Its members come from the visual arts, design, media arts and living arts, as well as from the social sciences and humanities or natural sciences and engineering.
The network promotes collaborative work and the sharing of facilities between its partner universities and supports the development of research creation projects. Through its artistic and scientific program, it encourages knowledge-sharing between experts from different fields of research and contributes to research-creation outreach through residencies and its national and international mobility programs. The training of emerging researcher-creators and the exchanges between experts and artists with the public by means of research creation projects are central aspects of Hexagram’s mission.
To this end, Hexagram organizes artistic and scientific events such as colloquia, conferences, exhibitions, concerts and other knowledge and creation dissemination activities in the public space.
Hexagram’s outreach is international: the members’ research-creation projects are deployed within art organizations and partner institutions in the cultural and creative industries. Exhibitions have been presented at world-renowned sites and events such as the Ars Electronica Festival (Linz, Austria), the Georges Pompidou Center (Paris, France) and ZKM – Center for Art and Media (Karlsruhe, Germany) and network members regularly present their innovative research at international conferences and colloquia.
