A Software Development Company on a Mission to Help People Find Their Epiphany

EpiFinder is a software development company on a mission to help people find their epiphany. As a healthcare company, EpiFinder’s goal is to help patients and their doctors track and collect their symptoms towards reducing misdiagnosis. The EpiFinder Patient app helps people with health and wellness tracking as well as a sign and symptom diary.

On the healthcare professional side, EpiFinder’s Tool uses an evidence-based algorithm to guide the clinician to ask the right questions, organize a patient’s signs and symptoms, and provide a differential. Coincidentally, epilepsy found us. Epilepsy experts have asked us to help improve the 60% accuracy rate of epilepsy syndrome diagnosis in the primary care setting.

Many patients complain that they typically suffer for 7-10 years before they can find the expert that correctly identifies their epilepsy. In a recent Mayo Clinic study, EpiFinder’s tool was tested on epilepsy patients and found to be 86.8% accurate, on par with epilepsy experts that are typically 87% accurate. Our current objective is to put this tool into the hands of every primary care doctor and their patients so that epilepsy can be diagnosed more accurately from the start. Our ultimate goal is to end misdiagnosis of all disease.

When EpiFinder’s founder was in medical school, he was bedridden with an autoimmune-looking condition. Going from doctor to doctor at his own medical school, he soon came to the realization that he was alone and that no one could help him. Instead of learning to live with the debilitating condition and accepting the inevitable, he utilized his medical training and talent with computers to create an algorithmic model of medicine. The model helped him to organize the scattered medical information into a single computable map. Using this, he was able to diagnose his condition, map out the pathophysiology of and root cause, and this enabled him to work with his doctors to find the most appropriate treatment for his condition. Fully recovered and in the process of returning to medical school, his system identified patients suffering from rare and chronic conditions that were misdiagnosed.

With the ability to diagnose over 3000 medical conditions, epilepsy experts found and asked our founder to focus the system’s attention on epilepsy. Epilepsy is actually a spectrum of over 60 rare medical syndromes with different causes that have seizures as their common sign or symptom. In the U.S., there are over 3.4 million individuals diagnosed with epilepsy. Within the 150,000 new cases every year, 40% are misdiagnosed, suffering from uncontrollable seizures, and incurring significant healthcare costs due to misdiagnosis and mismanagement. Patients suffer anywhere from 7 to 10 years before doctors properly diagnose the epilepsy syndrome type.

When epilepsy is not correctly identified and quickly treated properly, patients can experience poor health outcomes, including sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). EpiFinder’s tool has been shown to improve the accuracy and time of diagnosis, using an evidence-based algorithm. It does this by guiding the doctors to thoroughly and quickly gather the best sign and symptom data from the patient, summarizing the information in a clinically relevant way, and then providing a transparent differential.

EpiFinder has received numerous local, national, and international awards including Changemaker Entrepreneurial Team of the Year, the Spirit of Enterprise award, the BioAccel Award, the Flinn Foundation Award, the National Stevie Award (twice), and the Global IT award. Dr. Joseph Sirven, former Chair of Neurology at Mayo Clinic and former Editor-In-Chief of Epilepsy.com, stated, “EpiFinder helps doctors get to the right epilepsy diagnosis. This is a powerful application to help doctors and other healthcare professionals (NPs, PAs) to get to the diagnosis and help improve the lives of the people.” EpiFinder’s tool proved its efficacy through a recent Mayo Clinic study, which showed that the tool accurately screened for epilepsy 87% of the time.

Why Phoenix?

Phoenix is rising as a technology hotspot. This is due in large part to Arizona State University’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation initiatives at SkySong. ASU has been #1 in Innovation over Stanford and MIT for 4 years running, and it is no coincidence that EpiFinder has been affiliated with them during that period. Scottsdale and the metropolitan Phoenix area offer economic stability, connections, events like #yesphx, and mentors and advisors who are willing to give their expertise to your company.
