CORITIBA FOOTBALL CLUB GREEN ETHICS IN SPORTS CORITIBA SLC OPENS DOORS FOR BRAZILIAN SPORTS TO JOIN THE FIGHT FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND PRESERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY.
The fight for sustainability and the preservation of biodiversity gained a strong ally in 2021, when Coritiba Foot Ball Club launched the first sustainability program for a Brazilian soccer club. With this initiative, the team from Curitiba has opened the door for Brazilian sports to realize the importance and necessity of its integration with the preservation of our planet.
The program, called “Our Green Identity” (NIV), was a milestone in the club’s planning, focusing on more sustainable practices, the preservation of biodiversity and the role of sports as a driver of values linked to environmental preservation. A set of actions that definitively changed the way the club holds events, manages waste and controls its supply chain. Rethinking energy use, embracing environmental causes in a struggle to anchor the structures of its identity. As a result, we expect, above all, a strategic and continuous dynamic to educate through sports.
Resilience and dedicated investment have been crucial to consolidating this project, which defends the idea of Environmental Fair Play for soccer. Milestones include the traceability of waste in the stadium and training center, resulting in approximately 90% being diverted from landfills and a reduction of more than 30% in the financial costs associated with this dynamic. Small measures have been important for this, such as the banning of items like sachets and straws, bringing benefits in terms of cleanliness and efficiency of disposal. The commitment to sustainability encompasses the entire supply chain, with the active participation of internal and external teams.
Based on the theory of nature production, the club adopted the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve, going beyond legal requirements and promoting biodiversity. The partnership with an environmentalist from Curitiba and an association of recyclers strengthened operations and environmental awareness, as fans began to be impacted by content on social networks, the official website, use of the sound system in the stadium, information pills and campaigns. During 2023, administrative measures contributed to management efficiency and cost reduction, which resulted in a significant optimization of the use of energy resources, such as changing the lighting system in the stadium, moving administrative headquarters and seeking partners to purchase clean energy, among other actions. In addition to reducing costs and optimizing resources, our “Green Identity” has brought national and international recognition, becoming a benchmark in the ESG and sports world.
With the transition to a Soccer Limited Company, the new management took over and brought maturity and integrity, bringing NIV (Our Green Identity) into SLC’s DNA, solidifying the program as an essential part of the organization. This journey has led Coritiba to be the first club in Brazil to join the UN Global Compact and we use these achievements to make a plea: whatever the color of your shirt, join Coxa for a green identity.
