Launched in 2011, the CED is a community of interest and a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop, manage and promote a range of expertise, services and innovations in the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) sector.
Our headquarters are located at the airport in Alma (CYTF), but we offer services on an international level. Since its creation, the CED has continuously aimed to remain the Canadian reference center and a world pioneer in the field of RPAS for civil and commercial applications.
To do this, the CED offers the opportunity to innovate on an unparalleled Research & Development and test site, developed in collaboration with Transport Canada and Nav Canada, which includes eight (8) restricted airspaces (CYR) dedicated to RPAS flight in order to conduct test flights there in complete safety. In addition, five (5) other CYRs, managed by the Bagotville military base, are also available for large-scale RPAS flight operations. These flight volumes provide access to urban, agricultural, forest and maritime environments. The CED also offers access to a building with controlled access and to airport facilities. We even have our own small urban simulation site right at the airport, the QUALIA test site. To date, more than 220 flights totaling nearly 300 hours have been completed.
The RPAS industry
Already for several years, the RPAS industry has been booming. To meet the development imperative, RPAS services must increasingly interfere in the various fields of Industry 4.0. For this, these services must gain in productivity and this will only be done by the democratization of more complex RPAS operations, including Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations and the concept of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). However, these more complex operations require more substantial investments in order to develop new services while guaranteeing an acceptable level of security. It is to initiate and actively facilitate the development of industry projects that the CED has been entrusted with the role of host for the Niche of Excellence in Civil and Commercial RPAS, the pivot of the RPAS sector in Quebec.
