HOW CALM AIR IS ENHANCING NORTHERN LOGISTICS THROUGH DIGITAL TRACKING AND ADVANCED COLD CHAIN MANAGEMENT

For more than 60 years, Calm Air International has served as a vital transportation link for communities across Manitoba and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. As a Manitoba-based airline, Calm Air provides scheduled passenger service, cargo transportation, charter operations, and support for tourism operators throughout the north. From transporting residents and business travellers to delivering food, medical supplies, mining equipment, and other essential freight, the airline plays a critical role in supporting the communities and industries that rely on dependable air service year-round.

Operating in some of Canada’s most remote regions presents unique logistical challenges. Long distances, harsh weather conditions, and limited transportation alternatives require innovative solutions that improve reliability and efficiency throughout the supply chain. To meet these challenges, Calm Air has continued to invest in technology and infrastructure that strengthen cargo operations and enhance service for customers across its network.

One of the airline’s most significant innovations has been the implementation of QR code and barcode scanning technology throughout its cargo operation. Integrated directly into Calm Air’s cargo management system, the technology allows freight to be scanned at key points throughout the transportation process, creating greater visibility into the movement of shipments from origin to destination. The system has reduced reliance on paper-based processes, improved data capture, and helped minimize the risk of misplaced or misrouted freight.

“Our goal is to provide customers with greater visibility and confidence when shipping cargo with Calm Air,” says Andrew Grant, Vice President of Cargo. “The implementation of cargo scanning technology allows our team to track freight more effectively throughout the network while improving operational efficiency and helping ensure shipments arrive where they need to be, when they need to be there.”

For employees, cargo scanning provides real-time access to shipment information and a more efficient way to manage freight throughout the network. For customers, it offers greater confidence that critical shipments are being monitored and tracked at every stage of their journey. The additional operational data generated through scanning also supports continuous improvement initiatives by helping identify trends and opportunities to further enhance service levels.

In addition to digital cargo tracking, Calm Air has made significant investments in cold chain management. As demand continues to grow for the transportation of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, perishable foods, and other temperature-sensitive products, the airline has expanded its capabilities to ensure these shipments are transported safely and in accordance with strict temperature-control requirements.

A key part of this investment is Calm Air’s new Winnipeg cargo facility, which includes purpose-built refrigeration and freezer infrastructure designed to support large-scale cargo operations. Scheduled to open in 202fi, the expanded facility will significantly increase cooler and freezer capacity while providing more efficient handling and storage of temperature-sensitive freight.

What makes the system particularly valuable is its focus on temperature monitoring throughout the cargo journey, not simply during storage.

Real-time monitoring technology continuously tracks temperatures and provides alerts whenever conditions move outside acceptable ranges. This proactive approach helps protect product integrity and ensures sensitive shipments remain within required temperature specifications from origin to destination.

For northern communities that depend on reliable access to healthcare products, fresh food, and essential supplies, these investments have a meaningful impact. Enhanced shipment visibility through cargo scanning, combined with modern cold chain infrastructure and monitoring, allows Calm Air to move freight more efficiently while maintaining the high standards required for sensitive cargo.

For Calm Air, innovation is closely tied to the people, businesses, and communities that depend on its services every day. By combining advanced technology with strategic infrastructure investments, the airline is strengthening its position as a leader in northern logistics while helping ensure essential goods continue to move safely, efficiently, and reliably throughout northern Canada.
