Shortly after finishing his studies at Harvard, Busbud’s CEO LP Maurice decided to go backpacking across Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. As for many travellers on a budget, it became clear that intercity buses were the best way to get from here to there. However, language barriers, the overwhelming amount of bus companies, and the difficulty of finding clear and reliable schedules lead to much frustration. After his trip, LP returned to Montreal and teamed up with two long-time friends, Mike Gradek and Frederic Thouin, to discuss a new idea: Busbud. In a time when travelers can book a flight, hail a cab, and reserve a hotel room in a few clicks, there had to be a better way to buy bus tickets. Since 2011, there now is.
Today, with coverage in 20,000 cities over 87 countries, Busbud has the broadest bus coverage in the world. Travellers can also book tickets on the website or app in 11 languages and pay with 30 different currencies. Busbud is well on its way to achieve its mission of affordable, accessible, sustainable travel.
Busbud has raised $25M to date, including a $9M Series A in 2014 and a $14M Series B round of funding in 2018, led by Inovia Capital. Busbud’s advisory board includes industry leaders from Expedia, Google, TripAdvisor, eDreams, and Luxury Retreats. With the recent financing, Busbud has focused on expanding its international network of 2,800+ bus operators and growing its team.
Based in Montreal’s burgeoning Mile End, the Busbud’s team now counts more than 50 employees hailing from a dozen different countries. Busbud’s four core values are: “Going places, Independent spirit, Sustainability and Super helpful”. Busbud believes in an open and connected world, where diversity, both within and outside the company, is an asset for success. In 2017, Busbud launched The Omnibus Project, an initiative to promote diversity in tech, with ambitious goals and concrete actions every quarter. The team has either participated and/ or sponsored Ladies Learning Code, Women in Tech, Queer Tech, talks about gender bias, fundraisers for those in need, among many other projects.
As part of its product roadmap, Busbud recently launched user travel reviews, an array of new payment options, and an improved mobile booking experience. Busbud has ambitious goals for the near future. More than just an online travel agency, Busbud is focused on developing new technologies, offering a top-notch post-purchase travel experience, as well as leveraging artificial intelligence during the booking process and travel experience. Busbud also continually works to enhance its API, add bus operators worldwide, and launch game-changing new features such as “interconnections”, where travellers can book unique multi-leg journeys with several operators via one single purchase. Overall, Busbud helps travellers save money and time, while making a green travel choice
