Launched in May 2019 and located in Montreal, a global AI hub, BrainBox AI is a pioneer in the development of autonomous HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technology and focuses on dramatically decreasing the energy consumption of the global real estate industry.

BrainBox AI utilizes self-adapting artificial intelligence technology to proactively optimize the energy consumption of one of the largest climate change contributors: buildings. In fact, 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from buildings and HVAC systems alone are responsible for over 45% of those emissions. Without serious intervention, these gases will only continue to rise, having detrimental impacts on our environment. At BrainBox AI, we are fighting climate change by bringing innovation and cutting-edge artificial intelligence to the built environment, making buildings smarter and greener.

Using deep learning, cloud-based computing, and our proprietary process, BrainBox AI autonomously optimizes existing HVAC control systems for maximum impact, reducing energy spend by up to 25% in less than 3 months. More specifically, our solution combines thermodynamic equations with deep learning to estimate how each zone within a building will react to changing conditioning (e.g. weather, occupancy) over time. Our deep learning models can peek into the future and predict the state of every zone in a building with 99.6% accuracy. Leveraging this predictive model, our AI engine guides a series of algorithms to optimize the energy flow for each building, ensuring the greatest energy savings and occupant comfort. The AI decision-making process is based on the continuous collection and analysis of hundreds of thousands of data points, the application of a proprietary data pre-processing methodology called BoTM (Bag of Thermal Moments) and the continuous push towards the automated deployment of our AI models.

BrainBox AI works directly with many key players of Québec’s AI ecosystem including IVADO (Institute of Data Valorization), McGill University, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Concordia University and Université de Montréal as well as international research institutions such as the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), to service global real estate in various sectors, including office buildings, airports, hotels, multi-residential, long-term care facilities, grocery stores, commercial retail, and more.
