INNOVATION Quebec

In the current context of climate change, biodiversity loss, increasing pressure on natural resources and public health concerns, there is a consensus on the importance of building on the bioeconomy.

The bioeconomy is the economic activity associated with the development and production of bioproducts and biological processes. Relying on the use of biomass—in whole or in part— derived from agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, it provides eco-friendly alternatives to fossil resources, chemicals and non-renewable industrial materials and contributes to finding new uses for waste and co-products.

This sector has great potential and offers exciting opportunities for our team as Biopterre’s expertise lies in biotechnologies and horticulture products, biomass and green technologies, non-timber forest products and agroforestry, mycotechnologies and smart crops. Our applied research experts help businesses with their innovation projects, assisting them, for example, in developing biostimulants, valorizing co-products from biomass bioprocessing, growing plants of interest in agroforestry systems, producing enzymes by solid substrate fermentation, designing ecomaterials or optimizing phenotyping tools for molecule quantification. Thanks to our state-of-the- art infrastructure, our multidisciplinary team combines agronomy, biology, process engineering and environmental science.

The bioeconomy is a sector that requires inventiveness and openness. Driven by these two essential qualities, we are a key strategically and a committed collaborator in the success of our partners. Biopterre takes great pride in its mission and makes every effort to help
businesses carry out their innovation projects, thus contributing to the growth of Quebec’s bioeconomy
