AIA Philadelphia is a membership association representing more than 1,800 architects, over 250 architecture firms, and more than 175 allied members, organizations that collaborate with architects across a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, construction, planning, and design technology. As the second-oldest chapter of the American Institute of Architects in the United States, AIA Philadelphia has cultivated a distinguished legacy grounded in advocacy, design excellence, and meaningful community engagement.

The organization’s mission is to support and advance the architectural community by elevating design expertise, fostering professional growth, and promoting the value of architecture in shaping the built environment. It achieves this through a robust portfolio of continuing education programs that ensure members remain at the forefront of evolving industry standards, sustainability practices, and emerging technologies. In addition, AIA Philadelphia celebrates innovation and achievement through its highly regarded design awards, which recognize projects that exemplify excellence, creativity, and positive impact.

Advocacy is a central pillar of AIA Philadelphia’s work. The organization actively engages with policymakers at City Hall, representing the interests of architects while also championing policies that contribute to a more thoughtful, equitable, and sustainable public realm. Its advocacy efforts extend beyond the profession, emphasizing the importance of high-quality design in improving urban life, strengthening communities, and addressing pressing challenges such as climate change and social inequity.

AIA Philadelphia’s initiatives are guided by three core focus areas: advancing architecture and design, climate action and leadership, and equity and justice. These priorities shape its programming, partnerships, and long-term vision, ensuring that the organization remains responsive to both industry needs and societal challenges.

In addition to serving its members, AIA Philadelphia plays a vital role in connecting architecture to the broader public. As the founding force behind DesignPhiladelphia, it has helped create a platform that highlights the impact of design across disciplines and audiences. While DesignPhiladelphia engages the public directly, AIA Philadelphia remains dedicated to strengthening its professional community, supporting collaboration among architects and industry partners, and reinforcing the essential role of design in creating a more vibrant, inclusive, and resilient Philadelphia.
