I spent years walking into rooms where nobody looked like me. It took me longer to notice someone else was missing: future leaders. Not just future leaders but future leaders of color.

The higher my career carried me, the fewer people I saw who looked like me or those who shared my lived experience. I could have accepted that reality and focused on my own success. Instead, it left me asking a question that has never stopped challenging me. Why aren’t there more diverse voices in the room?

That question changed the way I viewed diversity. It changed the way I viewed the responsibility of leadership. Every opportunity I’ve been given carries a responsibility to help someone else see possibilities and those who find themselves uninvited into rooms.

Leadership Begins with Authenticity

Like many people early in their careers, I spent time trying to fit into environments that weren’t designed with me in mind. I learned how to adapt, when to speak, and sometimes when not to. Eventually, I realized something important. Fitting in might help you survive, but it rarely helps you lead.

Everything shifted once I stopped chasing other people’s expectations and became comfortable bringing my whole self into every conversation. People don’t build trust because you’ve mastered the right leadership vocabulary. They trust authenticity because they recognize it immediately. That experience changed the way I lead today. I want people to feel they belong without believing they must become someone else first.

The strongest organizations I’ve encountered have never been built around people who think alike. Progress happens when different experiences challenge familiar assumptions, broaden perspectives, and encourage better questions before anyone starts searching for better answers.

Humanity Creates Better Business

Long before I understood leadership, I understood sacrifice. My mother raised our family on her own. We didn’t have every advantage, but we always had encouragement, belief, and the expectation that character would carry us further than circumstance ever could. Becoming a first-generation college graduate wasn’t simply a personal milestone. It became proof that someone else’s faith in you can change the direction of your life.

That lesson followed me through every chapter of my career, from sales and publishing to banking, construction, and risk management.

Different industries brought different challenges, yet the same truth kept revealing itself. Business improves when people feel valued. Innovation accelerates when leaders create environments where every voice has a chance to be heard.

Whether I’m coaching executives, speaking with Executive MBA students, or working alongside leadership teams, the conversation eventually returns to the same place: How do we bring humanity back to our core values while building strong cultures within organizations?

Promotions eventually become memories. Awards gather dust. Titles belong to another chapter. The people whose lives you helped shape remember something far more important. When my career is over, I won’t measure success by the positions I held or the organizations I served. I’ll only want to answer one question honestly. What did I do for humanity, and what impact did I have on people with the gifts and talents I was given?
