I have always believed that innovation is not a destination – it’s a continuous journey and a culture you build one bold idea at a time. Innovation is not just born in boardrooms – it lives in the in-between moments. In a hallway conversation between a life sciences founder and a robotics engineer. In a high school student’s eyes when she realizes that a career in STEAM is not just possible, but meant for her. At Pennovation Works, those moments happen every single day, and they are exactly why I show up.
When I became Managing Director of this 23-acre innovation complex, I inherited something extraordinary: a community with a fierce belief that ideas, no matter how ambitious, deserve a place to take root. My job – as I see it – is to protect that belief, feed it, and make sure it reaches people who have never been told that innovation is for them.
That mission is more urgent now than ever. The world does not need innovation that looks the same as yesterday. It needs builders who bring new vantage points. It needs researchers willing to venture beyond the comfortable edge of what is already known.
At Pennovation Works, we have served more than 350 startups over the years, including 90 founders through our Accelerator program. These startups and founders have collectively raised over $1BN in funding – not because we handed them a formula, but because we created an environment where ideas could go to work… where experimentation is celebrated, failure is treated as data, and growth is enabled through resources and relationships.
Equally important is the pipeline we are building for the next generation. Through our Youth, Entrepreneurship, & STEAM (Y.E.S.) Initiative, we have welcomed over 200 students through our doors in the last year – young people who often come in uncertain and leave convinced that they belong in this ecosystem and that their ideas and voices matter.
As we approach a decade of innovation this October, I find myself reflecting less on the metrics and more on the moments. The late-night brainstorming. The pivots that turned into breakthroughs. The partnerships forged across disciplines, geographies, and generations. Ten years in, Pennovation Works is proof that when you bring the right people into proximity and give them permission to think boldly, remarkable things happen.
My charge to every innovator reading this: stop waiting for the perfect conditions. The best ideas don’t need to wait for a better moment. They are waiting for you to begin. So find your community, embrace the discomfort of not knowing, and remember that the world is waiting to see your ideas go to work.
