INNOVATE® Philadelphia

In 2009, AIA Philadelphia launched an ambitious initiative to ignite public interest in architecture and design, resulting in the creation of the Center for Architecture at 1218 Arch Street. Conceived as both a physical destination and a community resource, the Center served as a hub for exhibitions, programs, and dialogue. Its street-level presence, anchored by the AIA Bookstore, provided an accessible entry point for the public, while also housing the offices of AIA Philadelphia and the Community Design Collaborative, fostering collaboration across organizations dedicated to improving the built environment.

As the initiative evolved, AIA Philadelphia embraced the growing success of the DesignPhiladelphia festival in 2013, expanding its reach and impact across the city. This shift marked a turning point, leading to the organization’s rebranding in 2016 as the Center for Architecture and Design.

The new identity reflected a broader, more inclusive vision—one that recognized the interconnected nature of multiple design disciplines and their collective influence on how people live, work, and interact within urban spaces.

Today, the organization has taken another significant step forward by rebranding as DesignPhiladelphia and renaming its headquarters the Center for DesignPhiladelphia. This evolution underscores a deepened commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and accessibility, reinforcing the belief that design should be shaped by, and serve, the full diversity of the community. The organization envisions a future in which Philadelphia is designed for and by everyone, with design serving as a powerful tool for social, cultural, and economic progress.

DesignPhiladelphia fosters a vibrant and interconnected design ecosystem that supports individuals from early education through professional careers. Through multidisciplinary design education initiatives, it introduces students, particularly those in underserved communities, to new pathways and opportunities, nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and long-term aspirations. Its annual festival continues to serve as a flagship event, showcasing innovative ideas, projects, and voices from across the design spectrum, while its year-round public programs encourage ongoing engagement and dialogue.

For designers, DesignPhiladelphia provides a platform to connect, collaborate, and break down traditional silos within the industry, promoting a more unified and inclusive professional community. For the broader Philadelphia region, it plays a critical role in shaping the narrative of the city as a global design hub, one defined by creativity, diversity, and forward-thinking solutions. Through its work, DesignPhiladelphia continues to demonstrate that design is not only a profession, but also a shared civic resource with the power to transform communities and improve everyday life.
