“Imagine a world where everything that can be connected will be connected – where driverless cars talk to smart transportation networks and where sensors can monitor your health and transmit data to your doctor. That’s a snapshot of what the 5g world will look like.” – Ajit Pai, Former FCC Chairman. But we will never get there without re-imagining how the Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum is managed.

The DARPA winning research team behind the Xtremis technology

Xtremis was spun-out of Vanderbilt University in late 2021 to commercialize a portfolio of highly differentiated technologies related to improving the resilience and performance of military and commercial wireless networks through spectrum sharing (i.e., dramatically increasing the number of wireless devices that can co-exist in an area). Led by a research team that won two prestigious Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Challenge competitions, Xtremis is building the technologies that will underwrite the future of dynamic spectrum deployment.

Wireless devices transmit on frequencies in the Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum. These frequencies are licensed by the government to commercial users. In the U.S. alone, spectrum auctions saw over $100 billion spent for just 380 MHz of spectrum — a mere fraction (less than 2%) of commercially valuable spectrum. The dramatic proliferation of wireless devices, including private 5G/LTE networks for enterprise and industrial use, creates unprecedented demand for more agile and efficient spectrum solutions that maximize utilization (and monetization) of available frequencies. Currently, tens of billions of dollars of licensed assets lie fallow due to inefficient, static assignments that limit the ability of users to dynamically share frequencies based on availability and demand. For example, up to 20% of commercially valuable spectrum is set aside for “guard bands” that provide frequency buffers to mitigate interference between transmitters.

Xtremis ADSR SP1

Xtremis’ AI-powered spectrum OS platform directly addresses this inefficiency, creating a dynamic marketplace for granular, real-time access leveraging technology infrastructure developed and proven in the most challenging military environments. Through the development of a massively scalable, recurring revenue-based business model that facilitates and monetizes countless “micro-spectrum transactions,” Xtremis is positioned to capture asignificant portion of a $10 trillion worldwide opportunity – where spectrum becomes a truly liquid and efficiently utilized global asset for the demanding 5G/6G era, the expanding private network ecosystem, and beyond.
