I had the idea of founding the company when I realized how the Conversational AI market was becoming mainstream, and everyone was building multilingual voice search and voice interfaces. At the time, the only way to do it was through staffing companies, and it was too slow for the scaling needs. I knew that sourcing the wisdom of the crowds was the way to obtain the most bias-free and consented datasets in anticipation of what GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) brought later.
Today, Defined.ai is a global company headquartered in Seattle with R&D in Portugal, with around 200 employees. We have raised $81M, making me the woman founder in AI who has raised more Venture Capital in the world.
Today, we are the largest AI data marketplace in the world for ethically sourced AI data. We have specialized in unstructured data (speech, text, image, and video), which made us the go-to platform for the “Builders of AI” across various industries.
Our work has been recognized by numerous awards and recognitions, including Viva Tech’s Top 100 Scale-ups (2023); World Economic Forum – Tech Pioneers (2021); Deloitte Fast 500 and Inc. 5000, #27 (2020); and Forbes’ Top 50 Most Promising AI Companies (2019).
Even if these validate our journey, our success is about more than just the awards and recognition we have received. It’s about making a difference in the world and supporting AI creators through fair, accessible, inclusive, and ethical data.
At a time when technology has the potential to shape the future in profound ways, it’s more important than ever that we prioritize ethical and inclusive practices to ensure that AI serves the common good. This means providing accurate and reliable data that has been collected in a way that respects the privacy and rights of the individuals involved and is accessible to all, regardless of their location or background.
One of our most recent projects is Accelerat.ai, a consortium to accelerate the digital transformation of Portugal’s public and private sectors and transform its conversational AI landscape by leveraging modern technologies and under-resourced languages, such as Portuguese. The Portuguese Government approved the project through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), representing an investment of €34.5M.
Our mission at Defined.ai is to build the largest marketplace of not only data for builders but also models for AI users, making Accelerat.ai our first end-to-end ML product.
