INNOVATE® South Carolina

From South Carolina’s thriving aerospace and automotive hubs to its vibrant academic institutions, I see the ingredients of South Carolina’s transformative growth. We are establishing ourselves as leaders in composites, robotics, manufacturing, batteries, electric power, and autonomous systems. To realize this potential, we must prepare our workforce for a future as innovative as the technologies.

These revolutionary technologies are more than just technical fields; they are the backbone of modern problem-solving and ingenuity. They are reshaping industries and redefining what’s possible. Yet, none of this progress matters without skilled, creative individuals driving it forward. Autonomous technologies and robotics, often viewed as replacements for human labor, are enablers of human potential. South Carolina has the talent, the space, the infrastructure, and the passion to lead this charge.

As a professor, it isn’t only about teaching technical skills but also about fostering critical thinking, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning. We aim to empower students with the skills and mindset to thrive in their careers. Innovation isn’t just about technology; it’s about people. We are fostering a culture of innovation by providing hands-on learning opportunities, collaborating with industry leaders within our state and nationwide, and inspiring students to think critically and creatively.

On top of that, we’re expanding access to these opportunities, ensuring that underrepresented voices have a seat at the table. Whether in the lab or classroom, I prioritize collaboration, a skill students need for careers where success is built on teamwork. USC’s academic work floor, where students collaboratively tackle industry challenges, aligns our research with community needs, creates a talent pipeline that serves our economy, and inspires students to envision their futures in South Carolina.

For me, the ability to foresee challenges and transform those into opportunities through collaboration and ingenuity defines true innovation. In South Carolina, we are doing just that: leveraging our strengths to drive economic growth and workforce development. The biggest challenge we face today is ensuring our students and workforce keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology. We must continue investing in education, development, and workforce training initiatives that prepare people for high-tech, high-paying jobs.

When I moved to South Carolina in 2014, the starting of the McNair Center and the rapidly growing South Carolina aerospace market were the deciding factors. Ten years on, that market still sees continued growth, active investment, and development. Through innovation, investing in our workforce, and strengthening partnerships, we are solidifying our position as a manufacturing and aerospace excellence leader. Like SC’s rich history, the journey ahead is exciting; I am proud to be part of this transformative era for the state I proudly call home. The question isn’t whether we can compete globally but how we’re willing to step forward and keep our talented workforce here. Let’s innovate, collaborate, and build an entrepreneurial future where South Carolina stands as an example of progress and a destination for the best minds.
