As the executive director of the Maryland Sports Commission—an organization that attracts and retains amateur and professional sporting events across the state — sports tourism has never been just about events. It’s about people, communities, and the shared experiences that bring Marylanders together. Over the years, I’ve come to believe that excellence isn’t simply something we strive for; it’s a standard we live by. It guides every decision, every partnership, and every event we support across Maryland.

I often sum up the impact of our work with a straightforward phrase: heads in beds, food in bellies, gas in cars, credit cards and cash on counters, and butts in seats. That’s the economic landscape we aim to power. But behind those numbers is a much deeper purpose; enhancing quality of life, creating opportunity and showcasing what makes Maryland a premier destination for sports at every level.

Maryland’s strength lies in its diversity, from the mountains in the west to the ocean in the east, with major metropolitan centers and rural communities in between, each bringing its own character. When we bring events to the state, we’re not just filling stadiums or fields. We’re connecting a statewide network of partners, businesses, residents, and fans who all play a part in creating memorable experiences.

What sets Maryland apart, and what keeps us competitive for major bids, including the pursuit of International World Cup bids such as the 2026 bid for FIFA Men’s World Cup and future ones like the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2031 and the Rugby World Cups in the 2030’s, national championships and global-scale tournaments, is our reputation for operational excellence. Rightsholders know that when they choose Maryland, they’re choosing a team that arrives prepared, works collaboratively and delivers consistently. They know they can expect a community that rallies behind events, an infrastructure that supports high-level execution and a statewide commitment to doing things the right way.

Looking ahead, what excites me most is that we are still just getting started. The sports tourism industry is evolving quickly, and Maryland is positioned to not only keep pace, but lead. Our statewide partners are aligned, energized, and rowing in the same direction. Together, we are building a future where Maryland continues to stand out as a premier destination for both domestic and international sports.

If the first 17 years have been this exciting, I can only imagine what the next 17 will hold.
