INNOVATE™ Estonia

As the global maritime industry advances toward cleaner, more sustainable operations, Estonia has emerged as a hub of innovation in the decarbonisation of ports. ShoreLink, an Estonian company, has become a trusted provider of advanced shore power and charging solutions for ports and shipping terminals across the world.

Shore power allows vessels to switch off their engines while docked and connect to electricity from the local grid instead. This means ships can maintain onboard operations—like lighting, ventilation, and communication—without burning fuel in port. This significantly reduces air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, and vibration in port areas—bringing cleaner air and a quieter environment to nearby communities.

ShoreLink has become a valued technical innovator in one of the most essential components of this system: the cable handling interface that connects ships to shore-side electricity.

“Port of Tallinn’s commitment to decarbonisation helped validate our technology and gave us the confidence to pursue international markets,”
– Martin Mehilane, General Manager of ShoreLink

ShoreLink’s story began with a landmark shore power project at the Port of Tallinn, where the team developed a specialized technology to connect passenger vessels arriving in Tallinn.

The goal was clear: enable the city to welcome thousands of tourists—without the typical environmental cost.

That successful collaboration laid the foundation for ShoreLink’s independent launch in 2020 and remains a proud example of how Estonian innovation contributes to global sustainability goals. ShoreLink’s technology is fully designed and produced in Estonia—combining local engineering excellence with global performance standards.

GROWING WITH THE INDUSTRY’S DEMAND

As the international maritime industry pursues a clear green course to reduce emissions, the adoption of shore power is expected to accelerate sharply. Major cruise lines, ferry operators, and container terminals are increasingly integrating shore-side electricity into their operations to meet environmental targets and regulatory frameworks, such as the EU’s Fit for 55 package and IMO’s decarbonization goals.

For ShoreLink, this represents a clear growth trajectory. The company continues to invest in R&D and expand its product offerings, while maintaining its core strength: building high-performance Cable Management and Charging System equipment standard and tailored to customer needs.

“In just four years, we’ve developed multiple product lines and completed fast-track projects, some going from concept to delivery in just four months,”
– Alar Jõgi, R&D Manager at ShoreLink –

The company develops and has already deployed solutions for a wide variety of vessels, including RoRo, RoPax, Cruise ships, container vessels, bulk carriers, offshore supply ships, electric and hybrid ferries, and other specialized marine vessels. Shore power is not limited to private ports and shipping companies — the public sector and government fleets will also play an important role in adopting these solutions.

LOOKING AHEAD

From its roots in Estonia’s capital to installations across the globe, ShoreLink has proven that size is no barrier to impact. The company has contributed to some of the first of this kind shore power installations in countries such as Italy, Iceland, India, and the UAE —underscoring its capability to deliver customized solutions in diverse port environments.

Beyond equipment delivery, ShoreLink actively supports port authorities in mapping out the optimal technical solutions, ensuring safe, efficient, and future-ready operation of shore power and charging systems.

With a clear focus on its technical niche, a strong foundation in engineering excellence, and growing global demand, ShoreLink is well-positioned to support the next generation of sustainable ports.

As maritime electrification becomes a baseline expectation—not a premium add-on—ShoreLink is helping ensure that the green transition is not just possible, but practical, collaborative, and scalable.

ShoreLink is powering sustainability!
