Every road bump you encounter can be an opportunity to recharge your electric vehicle and extend its lifespan. ReViVe Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Guident, employs regenerative shock absorbers (RSAs) to capture kinetic energy from a vehicle’s suspension and convert it into electrical power.
The patented technology can increase an electric vehicle’s (EV) driving range by up to 4%, or approximately 500 miles annually. With the opportunity to boost the battery life of the EV, every journey becomes more sustainable and efficient. ReViVe’s innovation goes beyond energy regeneration, as the shock absorbers enhance the driver experience by providing real-time feedback and intelligently adjusting the suspension.
ReViVe’s journey began with the precision manufacturing of aluminum regenerative shock absorber parts using Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machines to produce eight prototypes. A collaboration with Florida Atlantic University (FAU), rigorous testing with an independent authority, and thorough evaluations using Material Test Systems (MTS) culminated in a semi-active device capable of real-world performance.
The development of ReViVe’s RSA was further enriched by invaluable interactions with customers and industry professionals in vehicle suspension. Their insights highlighted the importance of comfort alongside power output. In response, ReViVe developed a closed-loop controller to manage the damping forces of the RSA in real time, leading to an application for a second patent.
ReViVe’s journey continued with testing at a Tier 1 OEM manufacturing facility, where the power output was evaluated in relation to tire pressure, speed, and various controller tunings. This phase evaluated the performance of ReViVe’s technology for comfort or power output, depending on the driving scenario.
To ensure viability and ReViVe’s commitment to quality and performance, the product underwent an extensive phase of real-world testing. This included cleat tests and road trials with an SUV vehicle and a commercial truck.
