Canada’s first NSERC-P&WC Executive Industrial Chair in Aerospace Research on Propulsion System Integration and Optimization (2011-2016). These projects filled a significant lack of data and criteria in the literature on the preliminary design phase of aircraft engines. The goal was to develop an automated and integrated turbine design system that could find the optimal balance between aerodynamic performance, cooling flows, durability, cost, and weight.

The Chair’s program is motivated by the vision of École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) to increase its expertise in the field of propulsion systems by establishing a strategic industrial partnership with P&WC in order to train a new generation of engineers who will have better knowledge in the optimization and integration of all engines and aircraft systems.

Multidisciplinary Optimization – Simultaneous Analyses of a Component

The resulting system, used in the preliminary design phase of aircraft engines, resulted in more integrated results. The benefits of this project have greatly improved aircraft engine design methods in terms of design time, development cost and engine performance. This new design system is currently used in real time at P&WC for their new product offerings to their customers to enable P&WC to deliver competitive offerings through better analytics fidelity and reduced design time compared to the legacy system. This has enabled P&WC to secure more contracts in recent years. In 2020, this program was selected by United Technologies (the parent company) as a successful example of a collaborative project between Pratt & Whitney and the University.

The 77 students (from 2011 to 2022), involved in the chair, spent 90% of their time working at P&WC under the supervision of the company’s engineers and Professor Moustapha to carry out their research projects. Of these students, 20 were hired by P&WC. Because of its major impact, the chaire has been renewed three times (2016, 2019 and 2023).
