Innovation isn’t just about technology or groundbreaking inventions; it’s about fostering environments where communities thrive, cultures converge, and everyone has a seat at the table. As President and CEO of the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA), I have the privilege of leading an organization that has been a cornerstone of this vibrant community for nearly 70 years.

Southwest Detroit is a dynamic mosaic of cultures, anchored by 21 Spanish-speaking nationalities alongside African American, Arab, Chaldean, and other ethnic groups. This diversity fuels innovation and opportunity, making it one of the most resilient and creative communities in the region.

At SDBA, we are committed to equitable economic development, empowering small businesses, and fostering collaboration to ensure a thriving, inclusive community. This commitment drives everything we do, from transformative projects like La Joya Gardens to initiatives like COMPÁS Detroit, which for 17 years has nurtured the artistic and cultural talents of our youth while addressing systemic inequities.

A Community and Its Leadership

As the first Latina CEO in SDBA’s nearly 70-year history, I am acutely aware of the weight and significance of this role. I’m not just leading an organization—I am serving the community that raised me. As “the daughter that Southwest Detroit raised,” I bring to this position the lived experiences, challenges, and triumphs of our neighborhoods.

Growing up here, I witnessed the power of community and the perseverance of small business owners who worked tirelessly to create better lives for their families. Today, I draw on those experiences to advocate for the needs of our diverse community, ensuring that Southwest Detroit has a voice in decisions that impact its future.

This perspective shapes my leadership and informs my vision for SDBA. It’s not just about preserving the past—it’s about creating a future where every resident and business owner has access to the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Redefining Economic Development

Our projects are more than bricks and mortar; they are investments in people. The La Joya Gardens development, for example, combines affordable housing with an entrepreneurial accelerator, giving small businesses a chance to “stress test” from pop-ups to retail store fronts. This project isn’t just about revitalization—it’s about creating equitable opportunities that empower families and strengthen our local economy.

We’ve also embraced partnerships that amplify our impact. From collaborating with TechTown to integrate technology into small business services to collaborating with the City of Detroit and local artist Elton Monroy Duran on the Alebrijes installation in our Mexicantown Main Street, our initiatives reflect a commitment to collaboration and innovation.

Fostering Inclusivity and Innovation

At SDBA, we understand that true innovation happens when everyone has a voice. We prioritize inclusivity, whether it’s through Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations that honor our rich cultural legacy or ensuring language access for all residents and businesses. These efforts underscore our belief that a thriving community is one where diversity is celebrated, and every individual feels seen and valued.

Looking to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability, equity, and growth. From expanding COMPÁS Detroit to include health and wellness programming to advocating for systemic changes that benefit underserved communities, we are shaping a Southwest Detroit that reflects the values and aspirations of its people.

Leadership With Purpose

My role as CEO is not about individual success but collective progress. Together with a dedicated team and a passionate community, we are proving that when diverse voices lead, everyone benefits. As “the daughter that Southwest Detroit raised,” I am proud to stand alongside this community, ensuring that our shared history and dreams guide us toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

At SDBA, we’re not just building businesses; we’re building bridges. Together, we are innovating for a future that is equitable, sustainable, and full of promise for all.
