Global logistics is facing strong growth, even in uncertain times, and an ever-increasing demand for quality and speed of service, all while ensuring that our overall quality of life is not strained. The focus here must be on sustainability.

The aim is to make the best possible use of integrated networks and available space and capacity, considering both internal and external costs. Technological innovation and digitalization are crucial levers in this process.

Many entrepreneurs and companies are well aware of these challenges due to the increasingly rapid succession of supply chain disruptions. They are also willing to invest in new technology and supply chain concepts but often struggle to see the big picture.

In Flanders, spearhead clusters (such as VIL), knowledge institutions, and innovative companies, supported by the Flemish government, are pursuing an integrated approach in which collaboration is strongly encouraged. Such cooperation leads to more and better results. This Flemish vision of joining forces in innovation also attracts high praise abroad.

Regarding logistical innovation, Flanders has grown from a follower to a logistical powerhouse in just a few years. Whereas in the past logistical innovation was shared very reluctantly or there was minimal participation in international research and development, more and more players are now taking a leading role. This is true both in international networks and consultation bodies and in European innovation projects, where an increasing number of (air) ports, spearhead clusters, strategic research centers, and companies are key players or even leading forces.

By taking an active role in these international innovation processes, Flanders can connect with the most important developments in global logistics and supply chain management. It is also an excellent opportunity for Flemish companies and knowledge institutions to demonstrate their leadership in several key domains. The challenges ahead are global, and taking an active role in these international cooperation initiatives presents a significant opportunity to valorize innovation efforts.

There are many opportunities in innovation projects, such as those focusing on the crucial role of logistics in realizing the circular economy and involving all stakeholders in implementing new transport solutions. Other opportunities include the last/first meter, setting up transport chains where flexibility and resilience are inherently embedded in the model, extensive automation in logistics operations to improve seamless cooperation between chain partners, and exploring how data can be managed and used as a building block for truly dynamic logistics solutions.

As the spearhead logistics cluster, we are pleased to note that our Flemish companies, port and infrastructure operators, knowledge institutions, research centers, and the spearhead cluster itself are increasingly taking a prominent role in these initiatives and profiling themselves as innovation leaders.
