Let a theatrical play be the way that immerses you in storytelling so powerful, it will live with you forever. Kennie Playhouse Theatre (KPT) is one of the city’s hidden jewels, a thriving artistic hub that brings dynamic, thought-provoking, and spirit-lifting stories to the stage for everyone to enjoy.
From the young to the old, the “haves” to the “have-nots,” the wise and the wonderful — everyone has a seat at the table. Storytelling is one of the most precious gifts we have in America. It gives us space to reflect on our history, celebrate our creativity, and honor the divine gifts within each of us. That’s what Kennie Playhouse Theatre does best — it turns everyday lives and extraordinary legacies into unforgettable stage experiences.

Founded in 2006 by Executive Artistic Director Kenneth Dozier, the theatre began as a small grassroots company with one goal: to tell authentic stories that celebrate African American history, community, and creativity.
In Spring 2025, Kennie Playhouse Theatre achieved a milestone moment when it was selected as a Community Partner of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) — Nashville’s most prestigious theatre venue and home to major Broadway touring productions. This partnership marked the first time in TPAC’s 44-year history that the institution invited a minority led theater company to share its stage, making the collaboration a remarkable recognition of KPT’s artistic excellence and community impact.

Over the years, KPT has produced a wide variety of productions — from musicals to historical dramas — performed in parks, schools, churches, and professional theaters across Nashville. Their debut performance there — Sanctified, written by Javon Johnson — played to sold-out crowds, igniting the city with joy and pride as local community members.
That’s the magic of KPT: it unlocks talent in people who might otherwise never get the chance to share their gifts. The theatre brings together professionals and first-timers, blending expertise with raw passion. From acting and costume design to lighting and sound, KPT creates a place where dreams are discovered, developed, and displayed for the world to see.

At its core, Kennie Playhouse Theatre is more than a stage — it’s a safe space where creativity meets community. It’s where stories come alive, dreams take shape, and people of all backgrounds come together to laugh, cry, and heal through art.
Every ticket purchased, every sponsorship pledged, and every partnership formed helps sustain programs that change lives — from a senior rediscovering joy, to a child learning confidence, to a college student stepping into their purpose.

Programs That Transform the Community
KPT’s heart beats for the community. Over the years, the theatre has launched several powerful programs that reach across generations and neighborhoods, creating lasting social and emotional impact.
- Saving Our Seniors
Born out of the pandemic, this program brings joy and connection to seniors in assisted-living facilities. Through luncheon-and-learn sessions, KPT artists host interactive acting workshops, sing familiar songs, and share warm meals — restoring laughter and light to those who spent months in isolation. KPT also dedicates special 10 a.m. senior performances for every mainstage production, giving older adults a welcoming space to enjoy live theatre. It’s now the best-selling program in KPT’s history. - Kidz Craving Theatre Camp
This summer camp for ages 8–18 teaches the fundamentals of acting while also emphasizing fitness and nutrition — helping youth build confidence, creativity, and healthy habits for life. In communities where access to wellness education is limited, KPT is bridging the gap with fun, faith-filled, and fitness-based programming that nurtures body and soul. - We Up Youth Theatre Festival
A full week of performances by youth and for youth, this festival showcases young talent both on stage and behind the scenes. It gives kids the opportunity to explore the world of theatre — from acting and directing to stage management and design — while learning leadership and teamwork. - Don’t Act, Just Be Workshop
This popular acting workshop helps participants of all ages discover the truth of performance. Through monologue coaching and character development, attendees learn to bring authenticity to their roles and confidence to their lives — both on and off the stage. - Impact Awards
Each year, KPT rolls out the red carpet for its Impact Awards Gala, honoring individuals and organizations making a difference in the Nashville community. It’s an evening of celebration, recognition, and gratitude for those who inspire others to serve, create, and uplift. - College Internship Program
KPT also partners with universities nationwide to provide hands-on internships in theatre, business, and film. College students gain real-world experience in directing, design, teaching artistry, and arts administration — equipping the next generation of storytellers to thrive in the entertainment industry.
