When a nation of just over a million people finds nearly 200,000 of its own scattered across the globe, the question of how to maintain bonds becomes both practical and existential. Estonia’s answer to that challenge is Global Estonian, a government-backed initiative designed to serve as a bridge between Estonia and its people abroad.
Launched under the umbrella of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2022, and developed in cooperation with stakeholders at home and communities abroad, Global Estonian is more than a digital platform, it’s a strategic effort to unify scattered information, foster meaningful engagement, and strengthen the global Estonian identity. To support this mission, Ambassador at Large for the Diaspora Marin Mõttus was appointed to ensure that dialogue between the state and its diaspora is not only ongoing but also reflected in future policy updates.
Strength in Connection – Estonia on the Global Stage
One of the key goals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to support Estonian companies in entering new markets. Embassies abroad play a central role in this effort, working alongside ambassadors, economic officers, and export advisers from Enterprise Estonia (EIS). Together, they form #TeamEstonia—a dynamic network that helps discover new opportunities, share market insights, and organize business events. Many members of Team Estonia are vibrant representatives of the Estonian diaspora, bringing invaluable local knowledge and a unique blend of Estonian culture, language, and entrepreneurial spirit. Their presence strengthens Estonia’s global reach and deepens regional connections.
To further support businesses, dedicated business hubs have been established in cities like London, Paris, Riga, Washington, Seoul, and Singapore—with new hubs soon opening in Berlin and Copenhagen (link). These hubs offer companies a launchpad into new markets and a direct link to local expertise.
Adding to this momentum are the Estonian chambers of commerce abroad a growing grassroots force. Emerging in countries like Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, and Sweden, these chambers are deeply connected to local business landscapes and offer a fresh, community-driven way to support Estonian enterprise globally (link).
II Where Identity Meets Opportunity – Estonia’s Youth Abroad
In 2023, a redesigned Global Estonian Internship Programme was launched to engage Estonian youth living abroad. Managed by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) and curated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the program invites young Estonians (under 35) who were born abroad or have lived outside Estonia for over five years to explore professional life in Estonia through full-time internships lasting 4-8 weeks or even more. This initiative offers a unique “Estonian bite” a chance to experience the country’s business culture and workplace environment first-hand. Internships run from May to November and can be tailored to match each participant’s professional background. Since relaunch 2024, young diaspora members have joined the programme, gaining experience in government agencies, NGOs, cultural and science institutions, and private companies. The programme provides a state-funded stipend and, if needed, travel support, especially relevant for participants from the U.S., Canada, and Australia, where Estonian refugee communities from WWII remain active. For Estonia, this is more than symbolic: it’s a growing pipeline of motivated young people who feel at home in Estonia. In fact, five alumni from last year have relocated to Estonia.
