The Estonian Business Angels Network (EstBAN) has been connecting and educating startup investors and providing a platform for innovation in Estonia and beyond since 2012.

EstBAN has become one of Europe’s most respected and well-managed angel investor networks. With nearly 260 members and a growing track record of syndicated and private investments, EstBAN plays a central role in Estonia’s dynamic investment ecosystem, supporting collaboration, education, and cross-border syndication.

EstBAN was founded in 2012 by 23 private investors who saw the need for a common platform to meet, hear startup pitches, and invest. One of the most prominent EstBAN co-founders, business angel turned VC and EBAN Ecosystem Gamechanger Award winner Ivar Siimar recalls:

“When we established EstBAN, we luckily had someone to look up to – there was EBAN and FiBAN, the European and Finnish Business Angel Networks. Thanks to the support of the Finnish angels and EBAN, EstBAN could quickly build up its activities, principles, and position in the booming startup ecosystem. We soon gained recognition, winning the award for Best New Network the very next year after establishing. More than a decade later, we remain among the best-performing angel networks in Europe.”

In May 2024, that reputation was reaffirmed when the network received the Best Performing EBAN Member award during the EBAN Congress in Tallinn, a recognition of consistent growth in membership, deal flow, and investment volume.

ESTBAN – A BRIDGE BETWEEN INVESTORS AND FOUNDERS

EstBAN is deeply embedded in Estonia’s startup landscape. To find the most promising startups, it collaborates closely with accelerators, venture capital funds, government agencies, and major tech events in Estonia, the Baltics, and the Nordics. But startups can apply to monthly pitch-events online as well. EstBAN offers its members a steady stream of investment opportunities, with around 60 startup pitches and dozens of networking events annually.

The organisation’s “DNA” is built on three pillars:

  • Networking – connecting investors with each other and with promising startups.
  • Deal Flow – providing curated, high-quality investment opportunities.
  • Education – offering angel investor training, international study trips, and workshops.

Besides an investment, angel investors often provide startup founders know-how, consultancy and support. This is a two-way communication and relation building.

EstBAN is also an active participant in EU-funded projects, working with business angel networks abroad such as FiBAN, LatBAN, LitBAN, SweBAN, and their counterparts in Slovenia and Poland. These collaborations expand deal flow, encourage international syndications, and raise the overall standard of startup investing in the region.

IMPACT INVESTMENTS ARE ON THE RISE

In 2024, EstBAN members invested a total of €15.8 million into startups. This is an increase of over €2 million compared to 2023. Since 2018, the EstBAN syndicate portfolio has grown to include 24 companies, with total investments exceeding €4.5 million and three successful exits to date.

Popular investment sectors among members include business and HR software, fintech, health tech, biotech, deeptech, and space technologies. Looking ahead, EstBAN anticipates growing investor interest in defence-tech startups.

Lauri Antalainen, President

EstBAN President Lauri Antalainen underlines the network’s evolving role: “I’m glad to see total investments growing year after year. More importantly, we’re seeing a shift toward collaborative investing through EstBAN syndicates, which signals maturity in the market. Our first syndicate exit last year was a milestone, and I believe our collaborative approach will continue to strengthen both returns and relationships in the years ahead.”

HIGH AMBITION AND INTERNATIONAL REACH

EstBAN is a visible force in Estonia’s startup ecosystem and beyond. In 2024, the EBAN Congress Tallinn brought nearly 600 investors, founders, and ecosystem leaders from 50 countries to the city. The event featured startup pitches, workshops, and discussions on topics ranging from digital innovation to investing in uncertain geopolitical times.

EstBAN has international members and continues to expand its membership base, increase diversity among investors, and maintain a consistent pipeline of investable startups. The organisation remains committed to delivering high-quality angel training and strengthening ties with international networks to open new investment opportunities for its members. There’s often study trips abroad and an everlasting curiosity about up and coming unicorn startups within the whole network. Study trips have taken investors from Estonia to North America to Iceland to Israel and everywhere in between. Joining EstBAN provides an opportunity to be part of the vibrant startup ecosystem of the New Nordics.
