With digital adoption and transformation now vital, Digital Nova Scotia (DNS) leads the charge in championing the growth of the province’s digital economy. DNS is the industry association for Nova Scotia’s$3.6 billion ICT and digital technologies industry – and it has been representing the sector for more than three decades.
DNS’ mission – to foster the growth of the digital economy in Nova Scotia – is realized through a comprehensive approach encompassing skills development, capacity building, industry events, strong partnerships and the promotion of tech opportunities. This mission is not just a statement but a commitment reflected in every initiative undertaken by the organization. By enabling connections within the digital community, DNS ensures that the industry is not only growing but also evolving and thriving. The organization’s focus on skills development and capacity building addresses the ever-changing demands of the digital sector, ensuring that professionals are equipped with the latest knowledge and expertise. Industry events hosted by DNS serve as platforms for networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration, further solidifying the community’s foundation.
“At the end of the day, our goal is to create an environment where every digital professional and company in Nova Scotia can thrive,” said DNS CEO Owen Sagness. “We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to drive our economy forward.”
Community-building
A defining characteristic of DNS is that it’s membership-driven, boasting a diverse membership base that includes startups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large multinational corporations, universities and colleges, government bodies, nonprofits and individuals. This eclectic mix of members underscores the inclusive and collaborative spirit of DNS. The organization prides itself on its ability to forge connections across various strata of the digital ecosystem. Whether it’s connecting industry leaders through networking events and webinar discussions or linking industry with talent through its job portal, DNS acts as a conduit for growth and innovation.
35-year journey
The journey of Digital Nova Scotia is a testament to its adaptive and forward-thinking nature. Incorporated in 1989, the organization began as the Software Industry Association of Nova Scotia (SIANS) and later evolved into the Information Technology Industry Alliance of Nova Scotia (ITANS). These transformations were not merely rebranding efforts but strategic moves to align with the changing dynamics of the digital sector. Today, as Digital Nova Scotia, the organization has expanded its scope and influence, becoming a pivotal player in the digital technologies industry.
The DNS Impact
The programs and initiatives spearheaded by Digital Nova Scotia – including Skills for Hire Atlantic, Digital Discovery Camp and Tourism Digital Assistance Program, to name a few – are tailored to meet the needs of its members and the broader digital community.
Skills development programs ensure that professionals are continually upskilled, keeping pace with technological advancements, while capacity-building initiatives focus on strengthening organizations from within, enabling them to scale and succeed in a competitive landscape. A hallmark of DNS’ approach is its strong partnerships. By collaborating with local and national organizations, DNS elevates the profile of Nova Scotia’s digital sector on a broader stage. These partnerships are instrumental in creating opportunities for members, whether through funding, mentorship or exposure to new markets.
“Our partnerships are key to our success,” said Sagness. “Collaborating with diverse stakeholders—including economic, political and academic forces – enables us to unlock new opportunities and drive significant growth for our members and the broader community. ”Promotion of IT opportunities is another cornerstone of Digital Nova Scotia’s mission. The organization actively highlights success stories within the community, showcasing the innovative projects and achievements of its members. One such initiative is DNS’ annual Tech Forward Awards. Through eight unique awards, DNS recognizes individuals and organizations positively impacting the sector, driving innovation that addresses social, political, environmental or economic challenges, and promoting the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. This not only celebrates successes but also inspires others within the community.
Networking and connection are at the heart of Digital Nova Scotia’s activities. The organization hosts a myriad of events designed to bring together industry leaders, professionals and stakeholders. These events range from formal roundtable discussions to informal networking sessions, each serving as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and community building. The opportunities portal is another vital tool, linking talent with industry needs and fostering employment and project opportunities. Additionally, we share our industry’s success through our website, social media channels, All Hands on Tech podcast and much more.
As Digital Nova Scotia looks to the future, its vision remains steadfast: to support and drive the growth of the digital economy in Nova Scotia. The organization is poised to continue its legacy of leadership and innovation, adapting to new challenges and seizing emerging opportunities. With a solid foundation built on more than three decades of experience and a dynamic approach to growth, DNS is well-equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of the digital sector.
