Founded in 2020, BWIE is a pioneering organization dedicated to providing Black women with the tools, resources, and community necessary to thrive in the business world. Through a combination of mentorship, education, and funding opportunities, BWIE has cultivated an ecosystem that uplifts Black women and fosters economic development in Canada. Since its inception, BWIE has supported over 500+ Black women entrepreneurs in building and scaling their businesses.

A Vision Rooted in Empowerment
BWIE was established to address a critical gap in the entrepreneurial landscape: the lack of support tailored to Black women navigating business ownership. Historically, Black women entrepreneurs have faced significant systemic barriers, including limited access to capital, mentorship, and networking opportunities. BWIE was created to dismantle these barriers and provide Black women with the resources they need to succeed.
“The reality is that Black women often have to work twice as hard to be recognized in the business world,” says Tia Upshaw, CEO and Founder of BWIE. “BWIE exists to change that narrative and ensure that every Black woman who dreams of starting or scaling a business has the support she needs.”

Programs and Initiatives That Make an Impact
BWIE’s approach to supporting Black women in business is multifaceted. The organization offers a range of programs and initiatives designed to provide both foundational knowledge and advanced business strategies.
- The Ignite Program: A 16-week intensive entrepreneurship program that equips participants with essential business skills, from financial literacy to branding and marketing. Participants benefit from mentorship, coaching, and access to a network of successful Black entrepreneurs.
- She Means Business: A 10-week in-person series featuring industry leaders who guide participants through practical aspects of running a business.
- BWIE Pitch Competition: A platform for Black women entrepreneurs to present their business ideas to potential investors and gain funding to scale their ventures.
- NEW (Rural AI Edge): An 8 week program designed to educate Marginalized entrepreneurs in the rural communities on Artificial Intelligence.
Through these initiatives, BWIE has supported over 500+ Black women in building and scaling their businesses, providing them with opportunities that were previously out of reach.

Creating a Community of Excellence
At the heart of BWIE’s mission is a strong emphasis on community. The organization believes that entrepreneurship is not just about financial success but also about fostering connections, sharing knowledge, and uplifting one another. By creating an inclusive space where Black women can connect, BWIE helps its members navigate challenges and celebrate successes together.
BWIE’s mentorship programs have played a crucial role in this community-building effort. Many participants have credited their success to the guidance they’ve received from experienced entrepreneurs who have walked the same path.
“BWIE has changed my life,” says one program participant. “I went from struggling to get my business off the ground to having a solid business plan, a strong network, and the confidence to push forward.”

Advocacy and Representation
Beyond business development, BWIE is also a strong advocate for policy changes that support Black women entrepreneurs. The organization works closely with government bodies, financial institutions, and corporate stakeholders to create policies that promote economic inclusivity. By amplifying the voices of Black women in business, BWIE is helping to shape a more equitable entrepreneurial landscape in Canada.
Additionally, BWIE’s presence at major events and collaborations with influential organizations have positioned it as a leader in the Black entrepreneurship space. The organization has received numerous accolades and recognition for its impact, solidifying its role as a trailblazer for Black women in business.

A Future of Growth and Expansion
Looking ahead, BWIE has ambitious plans to expand its reach and deepen its impact. The organization aims to launch additional chapters across Canada, creating a national network of support for Black women entrepreneurs. Plans for enhanced funding opportunities, expanded mentorship programs, and strategic partnerships with leading corporations are also in the pipeline.
“The work we are doing is just the beginning,” says Upshaw. “We are committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that Black women entrepreneurs across Canada have the same opportunities to succeed as anyone else.
”With a track record of success and a growing community of empowered entrepreneurs, BWIE continues to redefine what it means to be a Black woman in business. Through resilience, innovation, and collective support, the organization is paving the way for a future where Black women not only participate in the business world but lead it.
As BWIE continues to expand its footprint, its impact will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come, inspiring more Black women to take the leap into entrepreneurship and turn their business dreams into reality.
