INNOVATE® Nashville

AllianceBernstein (AB) is a leading global investment management firm, offering diversified investment services to institutional investors, individuals, and private wealth clients in major world markets. In 2018, AB announced its relocation from Midtown Manhattan to Nashville, Tennessee, creating 1,000 high-paying jobs. During that process, AB recognized the strength of the Middle Tennessee region: avibrant and growing city, dedicated to enhancing its infrastructure, supporting local businesses and attracting new talent. In 2022, AB unveiled its state-of-the-art corporate headquarters at 501 Commerce within the Fifth and Broad Development.

AB in the Middle Tennessee Community

Since its relocation to Nashville, AB has been committed to the surrounding Middle Tennessee region and community, in addition to investing in current and future talent. The firm has given more than $7.5 million to nearly 200 local organizations over the last 7 years. Additionally, AB’s people here in Nashville are passionate about giving back, serving on a combined 30+ boards across the Middle Tennessee community.

AB’s Commitment to the Future of Innovation in Nashville

Nashville is home to a large pool of tech talent, and key players in the tech industry have brought talented individuals to the area, contributing to the city’s growth. AB is committed to investing in this local talent, recognizing its vital role in shaping the future of our organization.

Over the years, AB has dedicated time and resources to developing our emerging talent pipeline, forming partnerships with numerous local universities and colleges. In collaboration with GoTech, the Nashville Tech Council, and the Nashville Software School, AB launched AB’s Apprentice Program for Technical Talent. This program not only provided valuable hands-on experience for aspiring tech professionals but also strengthened our ties to the community.

AB is focused on expanding our talent pipeline through strategic relationships with programs such as Athlete Career Transition and Hiring Our Heroes, ensuring we harness a wide range of skills and backgrounds to enrich both our organization and the Nashville workforce. Most recently, AB has partnered with the Nashville Innovation Alliance, alongside local institutions and employers, to educate and connect emerging talent with companies in the city.

AB’s Focus on AI in Financial Services

AB has taken steps to integrate AI into many facets of the firm. In 2024, AB named Andrew Chin as its Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer –the first role of its kind at AB and a newer role in the finance industry.

At AB, the firm believes that AI can be a transformative technology. While AI does not directly touch any of our specific investments, we are leveraging AI in detailed ways across the organization to empower our decision-makers to make better and faster decisions. Applications including AI and NLP are being used to create investment signals, generate alerts, summarize text and facilitate easy access to documents within our investment teams. AB is also utilizing AI and data-driven approaches to enhance client engagements by understanding client preferences and predicting industry sales trends. Finally, AB is leveraging AI to improve our effectiveness and efficiencies in our corporate functions.

AB believes that our employees have ultimate ownership and accountability for final decisions. The combination of a tech-savvy subject matter expert combined with a toolkit providing advanced synthesis of data (or as Mr. Chin calls it, the “Iron-person”) is the model for success.

About AB’s Chief Operating Officer Karl Sprules:

AB’s Chief Operating Officer, Karl Sprules, is currently responsible for overseeing Audit; Community and Belonging; Global Technology & Operations; Legal & Compliance; Real Estate; and Risk. At the time of his relocation to Nashville in 2018, he held the role of Head of Global Technology and Operations. In this role, he joined the Nashville Technology Council Board, helping to launch innovative programs for future generations.

Mr. Sprules has been instrumental in shaping the firm’s technical architecture and infrastructure. He has overseen transformative initiatives that streamlined operations, improved infrastructure efficiency, and enhanced strategic agility across the enterprise. His stewardship of AB’s security infrastructure marked a pivotal shift from a purely defensive posture to a proactive response model, introducing maturity frameworks and board-level reporting that elevated the firm’s resilience. Mr. Sprules also played a central role in the reorganization of the technology and operations leadership team, aligning technology and operations with business growth strategies and advising senior executives on leveraging infrastructure for competitive advantage.

Mr. Sprules was a cocreator of AllianceBernstein’s Technology and Operations Associate Program (TOP), now in its 25th year, which aims to cultivate early-career talent across business analysis, project coordination, and tech operations. The program integrates hands-on experience with structured training, leadership development, and cross-functional collaboration—empowering associates to contribute meaningfully to strategic initiatives while advancing operational excellence and innovation across the firm. Since our relocation to Nashville, 106 Associates have graduated this 2-year program.

Mr. Sprules has driven AB’s focus on STEM and Robotics to inspire and invest in the next generation of technology talent. Karl has served on the NYC FIRST board, where he helped launch programs that reach thousands of students. Additionally, his work has helped provide mentoring and robotic labs to support students who participate in First Robotics competitions in both Nashville and New York.
